Product Description
This is a pattern based off of a stitch pattern from Renee Van Hoy's first stitch dictionary. The Mesh Lace Stitch. This pattern you will need at least 108 pegs in the 5/8" gauge. I used the large universal x loom in the gauge. I also used basically a full Caron Cake. You need minimal extra supplies, sewing needle, and a couple of stitch markers. This is an intermediate pattern. It also includes a video tutorial and written instructions. The pattern is a one size fits all for adults.
Mesh Lace Poncho by Scarlett Royale
Project Overview
The Mesh Lace Poncho is an intermediate-level loom knitting project designed by independent designer Scarlett Royale. This downloadable PDF pattern creates an elegant poncho featuring open mesh and lace detailing, perfect for crafters looking to expand their loom knitting skills with decorative stitch techniques.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a poncho—a versatile, one-size garment that drapes over the shoulders and provides coverage without fitted sleeves. The mesh lace construction creates an airy, breathable fabric with decorative openwork throughout, making it suitable for layering or wearing as a statement piece.
Loom and Equipment
The Mesh Lace Poncho is worked on a large universal loom in 5/8" gauge with 108 pegs. This peg spacing and loom size allow for the creation of a garment with appropriate drape and stitch definition. Essential tools include a looming hook for manipulating stitches, a crafters needle for finishing and weaving in ends, and stitch markers to track pattern repeats and important row markers throughout the project.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern calls for worsted weight yarn (aran weight), requiring approximately 360 yards—roughly equivalent to one skein of yarn such as Caron Cake. The aran weight provides sufficient structure for the mesh lace pattern while maintaining the intended drape and openwork aesthetic of the finished poncho.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Mesh Lace Poncho employs several fundamental loom knitting techniques to create its distinctive appearance:
- Cast On (CO): The foundation of the project, created by performing an E-wrap on all empty pegs across the loom to establish the initial loops.
- E-Wrap (EW): A basic wrapping technique where the working yarn is wrapped around the back of each peg, brought to the front, and wrapped back to the back. This creates the foundation loops and is used throughout the pattern.
- Flat Knit (K): The primary stitch used in loom knitting, executed by tossing the bottom loop over the top loop on each peg. This creates the basic knit fabric structure.
- Purl (P): A complementary stitch created by pulling the working yarn up through the bottom of the existing loop on the peg, removing the old loop, and placing the newly created loop back onto the peg. Purl stitches add texture and are often used in combination with knit stitches.
- Yarn Over (YO): An essential lace-making technique where the working yarn is laid over an empty peg without wrapping. Yarn overs create the openings and decorative holes characteristic of mesh and lace patterns.
- Knit 2 Together (K2tog): A decrease stitch performed by tossing two consecutive loops over the top working strand simultaneously. This reduction stitch is paired with yarn overs to create balanced lace patterns and control fabric shaping.
- Bind Off (BO): The finishing technique that secures stitches and prevents unraveling. The bind-off process involves knitting consecutive pegs, transferring loops between pegs, and tossing bottom loops over to create a finished edge.
Pattern Difficulty and Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for loom knitters who have mastered basic cast-on, knit, and bind-off techniques and are ready to learn decorative stitch work. The combination of yarn overs and decreases requires attention to stitch placement and pattern counting, making it an ideal project for developing lace-knitting skills on the loom.
Construction Method
The poncho is constructed using the loom knitting method, which differs from traditional needle knitting. Rather than using two needles, the loom's pegs hold active stitches, and a looming hook manipulates loops to create new rows. This method is particularly well-suited to circular or large garments and offers an accessible entry point for crafters new to loom work.
