Mandala Potholders by Aletta Boleyn

What is Being Made

The Mandala Potholders are decorative and functional kitchen accessories designed to protect hands and surfaces from hot cookware. Each finished potholder measures 7.5 inches (19 centimeters) in diameter, making them a practical size for standard pots and pans. This crochet pattern allows crafters to create vibrant, colorful mandala designs using yarn scraps, making it an excellent stash-busting project for fiber artists with leftover materials.

Craft and Techniques

This project is created using the crochet technique, classified as an intermediate difficulty level. The pattern is designed to be worked in the round, building outward from the center to create the characteristic mandala pattern. Crafters work on the right side of their piece throughout, joining each completed round with a slip stitch as indicated in the pattern instructions. The pattern offers flexibility in construction methods: when a round begins with a single crochet, crafters may either chain 1 stitch or work a standing single crochet, allowing for personal preference and technique variation.

Stitches Used

The Mandala Potholders utilize fundamental crochet stitches to build the circular mandala design. The stitches employed include:

  • Slip Stitch (SL ST) – used to join rounds and create seamless transitions between rounds
  • Chain (CH) – creates the foundation and spacing within the pattern
  • Single Crochet (SC) – provides structure and density to the design
  • Double Crochet (DC) – adds height and creates the more open, lacy elements characteristic of mandala patterns

The pattern uses US crochet terminology throughout, ensuring clarity for American crocheters.

Materials and Tools

The Mandala Potholders are designed to be made from scraps of 100% cotton yarn, making this an ideal project for using up leftover materials from other projects. The designer, Aletta Boleyn, used Scheepjes Cahlista yarn in the following colors: 249 (yellow), 074 (grey), 510 (blue), 106 (white), 398 (pink), and 254 (brown). Each 50-gram ball of Scheepjes Cahlista provides 93 yards (85 meters) of yardage. The yarn weight is classified as aran, a medium-weight yarn that provides good structure and drape for potholders.

For this project, crafters will need a crochet hook size H8 (5 millimeters). An important note for those without thick cotton yarn in their stash: the pattern accommodates alternative approaches, suggesting that crafters can hold two threads of thinner yarn together to achieve the desired thickness and fabric density.

Pattern Notes

Gauge is not critical for this potholder project, allowing crafters greater flexibility and reducing the need for precise gauge swatching before beginning. This makes the pattern more accessible for intermediate crocheters who may still be perfecting their tension consistency. The pattern's flexibility regarding stitch choices at round beginnings and yarn thickness options demonstrates thoughtful design that accommodates various skill levels and available materials.
