Lovely Blanket by Knit Sew Make

Project Overview

The Lovely Blanket is a knitted throw designed by independent designer Knit Sew Make. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a versatile blanket available in three customizable sizes, making it suitable for various spaces and preferences. The blanket combines fundamental knitting techniques with decorative stitch patterns to produce an elegant finished piece.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a rectangular blanket or throw in three distinct size options. The Small blanket measures 63.5 x 71 centimeters, the Medium measures 84.5 x 96 centimeters, and the Large measures 105.5 x 121 centimeters. Each size is color-coded within the pattern to guide knitters through the appropriate yardage and stitch counts for their chosen dimensions.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Lovely Blanket employs several foundational and intermediate knitting techniques. The pattern utilizes moss stitch, a textured stitch created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a specific sequence to produce a bumpy, woven appearance. This stitch is worked both as a decorative border element and as part of the overall pattern structure. The blanket also incorporates stockinette stitch sections, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side, providing smooth contrast to the textured moss stitch areas.

The pattern demonstrates stitch decreasing techniques including knit two stitches together (K2tog) and slip stitch pass-over (PSSO) methods, which shape and refine the blanket's structure. Additionally, yarn forward (Yfwd) techniques are incorporated to create decorative eyelet or lace elements within the pattern.

Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations

The pattern uses the following standard knitting abbreviations:

  • K - Knit stitch
  • P - Purl stitch
  • Yfwd - Yarn forward, bringing yarn to the front of the work
  • SlSt - Slip stitch onto the next needle without knitting it
  • PSSO - Pass slip stitch over the previous stitch
  • K2tog - Knit two stitches together as one stitch
  • M8 - Work in moss stitch for eight stitches, maintaining the correct pattern

The blanket construction begins with casting on between 109 stitches (Small), 145 stitches (Medium), or 181 stitches (Large). The initial rows establish a moss stitch foundation, followed by a main pattern section that alternates between moss stitch borders and patterned central areas. The pattern rows are numbered sequentially, with right-side (RS) and wrong-side (WS) designations to ensure proper stitch orientation throughout the project.

Materials and Tools Required

The Lovely Blanket is designed to be worked in Aran or Worsted weight yarn, providing a medium-weight fabric suitable for blankets and throws. Yardage requirements vary by size: the Small blanket requires 250 meters of yarn, the Medium requires 450 meters, and the Large requires 750 meters. These yardage amounts account for the complete blanket construction including all pattern repeats and finishing.

Essential tools include 4.5mm knitting needles, appropriately sized for Aran and Worsted weight yarns to achieve proper gauge and fabric drape. A darning needle is required for weaving in yarn ends and finishing the blanket after the final bind-off.

Pattern Customization

The pattern includes guidance for adjusting blanket dimensions beyond the three provided sizes. Detailed instructions at the bottom of the pattern document explain how to modify stitch counts and row numbers to create custom dimensions, allowing knitters to adapt the design to their specific requirements.

Brilliant!

I recently began knitting again after a gap of 30 years. There is so much more choice now, both in yarns and patterns which are now available as PDF's. This gives great flexibility as I can choose to print the patterns or do my bit for the environment and read the pattern on screen. I am currently making the Lovely Blanket for Aran / Worsted weight yarn. The pattern contained details of the total length of yarn required which was extremely helpful. This allowed me to chose a Paintbox Yarns in...
