Product Description

Jonathan appears as a squishy, 2-color brioche, stripy scarf with some cables here and there, until you hold it flat, stretching it out a bit, and reveal the hidden goats!

Make it more narrow or wide by choosing your yarn weight to fit your wants, and use multiple colors for the contrasting background yarn if you want a more colorful look.

This piece can be very guy-friendly - it was even designed specifically for a goat-loving metalhead dude!

The pattern is written for brioche beginners, to be easy if you've never done it before; some cable experience is recommended, but cabling in the brioche stitch is just like working normal cables with a cable needle.

There are three different goats, with three different face shapes and horn styles, so you can choose your favorite to go on the end, where it will be most visible, and then either stick the other two on after that, or just use the non-goat cable pattern to fill in the rest of your scarf. Jonathan Scarf by Lee Meredith

What Is Being Made

Jonathan is a knitted scarf that combines a playful visual surprise with wearable comfort. The scarf appears as a simple 2-color striped design when bunched or casually worn, but reveals hidden goat motifs when stretched flat and examined closely. This hidden pattern element makes Jonathan an engaging project for knitters who enjoy discovering unexpected details in their finished work.

Knitting Techniques Used

The primary technique featured in Jonathan is brioche stitch, a reversible knitting method that creates a squishy, textured fabric with excellent drape and elasticity. Brioche stitch is worked by slipping stitches and knitting into the yarn overs from the previous row, resulting in a fabric that looks complex but is surprisingly meditative to knit. The scarf also incorporates cable stitches strategically placed throughout the design to create visual interest and help define the hidden goat pattern that emerges when the fabric is stretched.

Stitches and Construction

The scarf is constructed using brioche stitch as the foundation, with cable stitches interspersed to create texture and pattern definition. The combination of these stitches produces a fabric that is both squishy and structured, allowing the hidden design to remain invisible during casual wear but become apparent when the knitter deliberately stretches and examines the piece.

Customization Options

Jonathan offers flexibility for knitters to adapt the design to their preferences. The scarf width can be adjusted by selecting different yarn weights—choosing lighter weight yarns will create a narrower scarf, while bulkier yarns will produce a wider finished piece. Knitters can also experiment with multiple colors for the contrasting background yarn to achieve a more colorful appearance, moving beyond the traditional 2-color striped look shown in the samples.

Difficulty Level

Jonathan is rated as an intermediate knitting project, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to explore more advanced techniques like brioche stitch and cable work. The brioche stitch, while appearing complex, becomes rhythmic and enjoyable once the knitter understands the basic mechanics of slipping and knitting into yarn overs.
