The squares are joined as you go, so there’s no seaming afterwards. The sleeves are worked in the round downwards from the shoulder to the cuff. The hood is worked upwards in one piece and there’s a short seam to close the top of the hood. This seam is worked in ss and can’t be seen, even when the hood is down. This pattern is great for using up yarn scraps.
Iodhnait Block Party Crochet Jacket
What Is Being Made
Iodhnait is a colorful crochet jacket designed by Caroline Murphy. This garment is constructed using a block-based modular approach, where individual granny squares are crocheted separately and then joined together to create the finished jacket. The design offers a contemporary take on classic granny square construction, resulting in a vibrant, patchwork-style outerwear piece suitable for intermediate crocheters.
Sizing and Finished Measurements
The jacket is designed to fit chest sizes from 81–101.5cm (32–40 inches). The actual finished chest measurement is 119.25cm (47 inches), providing a comfortable, relaxed fit. The length from shoulder measures 48.25cm (19 inches), and the sleeve length from underarm is 45.5cm (18 inches).
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This project employs modular crochet construction, a technique where the garment is built from individual square motifs that are later joined together. The primary stitch pattern used throughout is the granny stitch, a foundational crochet technique that creates an open, lacy fabric with characteristic corner chain spaces. The modular approach allows for creative color blocking and makes the project manageable in sections.
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch) – the foundation stitch used to begin rounds and create the structural framework
- Double crochet (dc) – the main stitch forming the body of each granny square
- Chain space (ch-sp) – the gaps created between groups of stitches, particularly the corner 2-chain spaces characteristic of granny squares
- Single crochet (sc) – used for edgings to create a finished, refined border
- Slip stitch (ss) – used to join rounds and connect completed motifs
Yarn and Materials
The Iodhnait jacket requires approximately 1,320 metres (1,445 yards) of DK weight yarn in assorted colors. The use of multiple colors is integral to the block party aesthetic, allowing crafters to create striking color combinations and personalize their finished garment. Two crochet hooks are needed: a 5mm hook for the main fabric, which should produce a tension of 16 stitches and 7 rows over 10cm (4 inches) when working granny stitch, and a 4mm hook for working the edgings to create a neat, polished finish. The pattern is written using American crochet terminology.
Skill Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle modular construction and color work. The granny square motif is a classic pattern that intermediate crafters should be comfortable executing, and the block-by-block approach provides natural stopping points throughout the project.
