Igneous Petrology Knit Shawl by Allison Janocha
What Is Being Made
Igneous Petrology is an advanced-level knit shawl designed by Allison Janocha. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished shawl measuring 14 inches deep by 88 inches wide (36 cm by 224 cm), making it a generous wrap suitable for layering or draping.
Yarn and Materials
This shawl is worked in sport weight yarn using a luxury fiber blend. The sample was created with Becoming Art Theia MCS Sport, which features a premium composition of 75% merino wool, 15% cashmere, and 10% silk. The pattern calls for two colors:
- Main Color (MC): 260 yards (240 m) in Contrary Wise
- Contrast Color (CC): 260 yards (240 m) in Eat Me
Additional materials required include US Size 10 (6 mm) circular needles (or the size needed to achieve proper gauge), a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, blocking supplies, and optional stitch markers.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Igneous Petrology is classified as an advanced knitting project, indicating it incorporates sophisticated stitch patterns and techniques. The pattern employs a combination of fundamental and intermediate stitches worked in a structured sequence. Key stitches used include:
- Knit (k) and purl (p) stitches, which form the foundation of the colorwork
- Slip stitches (s2 purlwise wyib) — slipping stitches purlwise with yarn in back — which create texture and help manage the two-color pattern
- Ribbed sections created through alternating knit and purl combinations, such as (k2, p2) and (p2, k2) sequences
The stitch pattern repeats systematically across rows, with slipped stitches worked with yarn held in back (wyib) to maintain consistent tension and visual interest. The pattern includes a gauge swatch worked over 30 cast-on stitches, measuring 4 inches tall by 9 inches wide (10 cm by 23 cm) after blocking, which helps knitters verify proper gauge before committing to the full project.
Construction and Finishing
The shawl is constructed using circular needles and worked in rows. Proper blocking is essential to achieve the finished dimensions and to even out the stitch pattern. The pattern includes detailed instructions for gauge swatching, which is particularly important for an advanced project to ensure the final shawl meets its intended measurements.
