Product Description
Here is a sweet little pattern for a helmet hat to fit 12" Blythe and Middie Blythe. The pattern instructions are basically the same but one is knit with aran weight yarn and 4mm needles and the other is knit with sock yarn and 2.5mm needles. The helmet fastens with a button at the side and has a back seam. Those of you who like circular knitting could work out how to knit it in the round quite easily too. It can be decorated as simple or as wild as you like...the possibilities are endless!
Blythe Knitted Helmet Hat by Polly
What is Being Made
This is a knitted helmet hat designed specifically for Blythe and Middie Blythe dolls. The helmet style provides full head coverage with a structured fit suitable for small doll proportions. This downloadable PDF pattern allows crafters to create a custom-fitted accessory for their doll collection using basic knitting techniques.
Craft and Primary Technique
The project uses knitting as the primary construction method. The helmet is worked back and forth in flat rows rather than in the round, which means it requires a back seam to close the finished piece. Crafters may use either circular needles or straight needles depending on personal preference, though the flat construction method works equally well with both needle types.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used
The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches and shaping techniques:
- Knit (K) — the basic knit stitch forming the foundation of the fabric
- Purl (P) — the reverse of the knit stitch, used to create texture and structure
- Stocking Stitch (SS) — created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to produce a smooth, classic fabric surface
- Increases (Inc) — made by knitting into the horizontal strand between stitches on the right and left needles, then knitting into the back of the loop to add stitches
- Kfb (Knit into Front and Back) — an increase technique where the crafter knits into both the front and back of the next stitch to increase by one stitch
- K2tog (Knit Two Together) — a decrease technique that combines two stitches into one
The pattern uses strategic increase rows to shape the helmet from a small cast-on of 6 stitches, expanding progressively through multiple increase rows to reach the desired width and depth for proper doll fit.
Materials and Yarn Weight
The helmet hat requires aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition and structure for small-scale projects. The pattern specifically notes that old-fashioned mohair works well for this project, suggesting that mohair yarn in aran weight is an excellent fiber choice that creates a soft, textured finish suitable for doll accessories. Crafters will need 4mm needles to work with aran weight yarn at the appropriate gauge.
Pattern Structure
The pattern begins with a small cast-on and uses a systematic approach to shaping, with alternating purl rows and increase rows. This construction method creates a structured helmet form that gradually expands to accommodate the doll's head measurements. The back seam closure provides a neat finish and allows for adjustments to fit different doll sizes within the Blythe family.
