Hapish Shetland-Style Square Shawl
What Is Being Made
Hapish is a squarish hap shawl designed by sneezerville in the traditional Shetland style. This knit shawl offers versatile styling options—wear it doubled over for a wrapped look or draped loosely over the shoulders. The square construction makes it an adaptable accessory suitable for various occasions and personal styling preferences.
Construction Method
The Hapish shawl is knit back and forth in rows rather than in the round, allowing knitters to work exclusively in knit stitch throughout the entire project. This construction approach simplifies the knitting process by eliminating the need to manage circular needles or work purled rows, making it more accessible for intermediate-level knitters.
Stitches and Techniques Used
- Garter Stitch: The foundation stitch of this pattern—knit every row to create the characteristic textured, reversible fabric
- Yarnovers: Used strategically throughout the pattern as the primary increase method, creating decorative eyelet details while shaping the shawl
Materials and Specifications
Yarn Requirements: This pattern calls for sport weight yarn totaling approximately 680 yards across two colors. The main color requires 500 yards (approximately 3 skeins of Cascade 220 Sport weight), while the contrasting color requires 180 yards (approximately 2 skeins of Cascade 220 Sport weight). The designer used orange and white in the original sample.
Needles and Tools: US 9 (5.5 mm) circular needle measuring 40 inches, plus a tapestry needle for finishing.
Gauge: 13 stitches by 28 rows over 4 inches in garter stitch. The pattern notes that exact gauge matching is not critical for this project.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is well-suited for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle shaping techniques and color work. The straightforward stitch pattern and row-by-row construction make it an excellent intermediate project despite the two-color element.
Pattern Format and Availability
Hapish is available as a free downloadable PDF pattern. The pattern is provided for unlimited personal use only and may not be reproduced, sold, or used to create items for commercial sale.
