Product Description
This pattern is for a mosaic square that can be used in other types of projects, such as blankets, pillows, trick-or-treat bags, table mats, etc.
Any yarn or hook will work, depending on the desired size of the finished square. I used yarn weight of 4 with a 5.5 hook, which creates a square of 13.5” x 13”.
You will need at least 4 colors of yarn - one for the background and the 3 Candy Corn colors. You could also use variegated yarn for the background, or use 2-3 colors of yarn to create a striped or gradient background. In the example, I alternated purple & aqua for the background rows.
This is a great way to use up scraps! The background will need approximate 100 yds of worsted or aran (wt 4) yarn, and the candy corn will need approximately 35 yds of each color (yellow, orange & white).
Pattern is in US crochet terms.
Halloween Mosaic Square – Candy Corn Crochet Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Halloween Mosaic Square – Candy Corn is a decorative crochet square designed by Cyndie Birdsong. This project creates a slightly rectangular mosaic-style crochet square featuring candy corn imagery, perfect for Halloween decorations. The finished piece showcases the classic candy corn color palette and design through mosaic crochet techniques.
Craft Technique: Mosaic Crochet
This pattern utilizes mosaic crochet, a specialized technique that creates interesting shapes and texture by strategically placing stitches to form visual patterns and images. Mosaic crochet works by carrying yarn colors inside stitches and reading from graph charts to determine stitch placement and color changes. While this method can initially appear complex when reading chart graphs, the pattern is designed to be accessible to intermediate crocheters with basic stitch recognition skills and familiarity with standard crochet terminology.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The pattern employs mosaic crochet stitches worked from graph charts. Crafters should have experience recognizing and executing standard crochet stitches, as the pattern assumes intermediate-level familiarity with crochet fundamentals and stitch terminology. The mosaic technique involves carrying yarn colors within stitches to build the candy corn design layer by layer according to the provided charts.
Materials: Yarn and Tools
- Yarn Weight: Aran or Worsted weight yarn

Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While mosaic crochet can initially seem confusing when reading graph charts, the pattern is written to help clarify the process. Success requires some prior crochet experience, comfort with recognizing stitches, and understanding of standard crochet terminology. Beginners new to mosaic techniques may find this pattern challenging but achievable with patience and chart-reading practice.
