What is Being Made

Greenshield is an easy triangular shawl designed as a light, versatile layer for the shoulders. Inspired by the common Green Shield Lichen found clinging to coastal trees, this shawl captures the intriguing colours and textures of nature. The triangular construction allows crafters to customize the finished size by continuing to work increases, making it adaptable for various preferences and yarn quantities.

Design and Construction Techniques

The shawl features a simple lace motif combined with moss stitch stripes, creating visual interest while remaining accessible to beginner knitters. Regular increases throughout the pattern generate the characteristic triangular silhouette, allowing the shawl to flutter gracefully when worn, mimicking the movement of lichen in coastal moorland breezes. The Cable Cast On technique is used to begin the project, providing a sturdy, elastic foundation suitable for lace knitting.

Stitches Used

• Yarn Over (YO) – creates the openwork lace elements
• Skpo – slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over; used for decreasing

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Greenshield is worked using luxury yarn blends held double for added warmth and drape. The pattern calls for a Mohair Silk blend combined with an Alpaca Silk blend, both held together as a single strand. This combination creates a super luxurious shoulder shield ideal for cooler times, offering both softness and insulation. The yarn weight is classified as lace weight, which contributes to the shawl's delicate, ethereal quality despite the doubled construction.
