Glovelettes by Carle Dehning
What is Being Made
Glovelettes are hand-hugging fingerless mittens designed to keep your hands warm while leaving your fingers free. These practical accessories are perfect for reading or any activity where you need finger mobility while maintaining hand warmth. The design prioritizes comfort and functionality, allowing you to enjoy a cozy mystery book without removing your hand coverings.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using the knitting craft. The glovelettes are knitted in the round using circular needles, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a seamless, flattering fit. Working in the round is a fundamental knitting technique that produces a continuous tube of fabric without the unflattering side seams that can occur with flat knitting and subsequent seaming.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used
The pattern employs several essential knitting stitches and techniques:
- Ribbing: The cuff begins with K1 P1 ribbing (knit one, purl one) for 10 rows, followed by K3 P1 ribbing for an additional 10 rows, creating a stretchy, fitted cuff with a total of 20 rows. Ribbing is an elastic stitch pattern that provides recovery and a snug fit around the wrist.
- Stockinette stitch: The main hand section is worked in stockinette stitch (knit every row when working in the round), creating a smooth, classic fabric.
- Make one (m1) increases: Strategic increases are worked throughout the hand section to shape the glovelettes and create the thumb gusset. These increases add stitches gradually to accommodate the hand's contours and allow for thumb movement.
- Thumb gusset construction: A centered thumb gusset is created using paired increases on either side of a center stitch, allowing the glovelette to fit comfortably around the thumb area while maintaining proper shaping.
Materials and Yarn
The glovelettes are knitted using 50 grams of Nurturing Fibres Supertwist sock yarn, a fingering-weight yarn ideal for creating fitted, durable hand accessories. Sock yarn is traditionally chosen for its strength and elasticity, making it perfect for garments that experience frequent wear and movement.
Needles and Tools
The pattern requires two circular needles in different sizes to accommodate the ribbed cuff and main hand sections:
- 3.25mm circular needle: Used for the initial cast-on and the first ribbing section (K1 P1 rib)
- 2.75mm circular needle: Used for the K3 P1 ribbing and the main hand section, creating a gauge that produces the proper fit
- Blunt end tapestry needle: Used for weaving in yarn ends and finishing the project
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the basic stitches are fundamental, the pattern requires comfort with working in the round on circular needles, understanding increase techniques, managing a thumb gusset, and reading pattern instructions with multiple stitch counts and shaping rows. Knitters should have experience with basic knitting techniques before attempting this design.
