Gemma 8ply Baby Shoes by Jennifer Lee

What is Being Made

Gemma is a pair of T-bar style baby shoes designed for infants from newborn through 9 months. The shoes feature a classic T-bar strap with button closure, making them both decorative and functional for delicate baby feet. Available in four sizes to accommodate foot lengths from 7cm (2¾ inches) for newborns up to 10cm (4 inches) for 9-month-old babies.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level knitting project combines two fundamental stitch techniques to create visual interest and structure. The primary construction uses garter stitch, which is created by knitting every row, producing a dense, textured fabric with horizontal ridges. This stitch provides excellent stability and elasticity, making it ideal for baby garments that need to stretch slightly while maintaining their shape.

The pattern also incorporates stocking stitch (also called stockinette stitch) in selected areas, which creates a smoother, more refined finish compared to garter stitch. The combination of these two stitches allows the designer to create contrast and definition in the shoe structure. Additional shaping techniques include M1 (make 1) increases for gradual expansion, slip stitch decreases, and yarn forward techniques for creating decorative or functional elements.

Materials and Tools Required

The pattern calls for DK weight 8ply yarn in a single 100g ball (approximately 250 meters), with the specific recommendation of Lincraft DK 8ply yarn. The relatively small yardage requirement makes this an economical project suitable for using yarn scraps or stash yarn. Knitters should note that actual yardage consumption varies depending on individual knitting tension and yarn characteristics.

Construction requires 3.75mm knitting needles (UK size 9, US size 5), a standard size for DK weight yarn. Additional materials include a wool needle for seaming the shoe pieces together and 2 small buttons for the T-bar strap closure.

Pattern Specifications

The pattern is rated as easy to intermediate difficulty, making it accessible to knitters with basic skills who are ready to progress beyond simple projects. The recommended tension is 22.5 stitches and 44 rows to 10cm (4 inches) measured over garter stitch using 3.75mm needles. Achieving proper tension is essential for ensuring the finished shoes fit correctly across the four available size options.
