Product Description

Make a cute mouse called Friebel with this super easy pattern.

Size: 5 inch/ 13 cm sitting when made with Istex Lett Lopi and hook E / 3,5 mm.

The instructions are written in US crochet terms. The pattern contains a list of materials, tools and accessories needed. Brand and colour numbers of the needed yarn. A clear and colour coded description of how to crochet and assemble the animal. Pictures and illustrations to help getting everything right.

Materials: for this mouse you'll need worsted weight yarn and an E US/3.5 mm crochet hook. You'll need two colours of yarn, dark beige (3/4 of a 100 yard skein) and beige (1/4), make sure the colours are only a shade different. The quantities are estimates. For the eyes I've used 8 mm animal eyes. You will also need fibrefill and pellets for a bit of extra weight in the body (I use Hama beads) and some pink and dark brown embroidery yarn for the nose. Lopi colour numbers: 0085 and 0086.

Friebel the House Mouse Crochet Pattern

What is Being Made

Friebel is a charming crocheted amigurumi-style house mouse toy designed by Sonja van der Wijk. This finished stuffed mouse measures approximately 5.1 inches (13 centimeters) when sitting, making it a small decorative or play toy. The pattern is presented as a downloadable PDF with complete instructions for crafting this adorable rodent character.

Difficulty Level and Suitability

This project is classified as a beginner-level crochet pattern, making it accessible to those new to amigurumi construction and crochet techniques. The straightforward instructions and fundamental stitching methods used throughout the pattern make it an excellent introduction to toy making.

Crochet Techniques Used

The mouse is constructed using several essential crochet techniques:

  • Working in the round: The entire doll is worked in continuous rounds and spirals rather than in flat rows, which is the standard method for creating three-dimensional amigurumi toys
  • Spiral construction: Rounds are worked continuously without joining, creating seamless spiral sections that form the body, head, and limbs
  • Color changes: The pattern incorporates color transitions, with detailed instructions provided for executing changes smoothly. Color changes are made in the final loop of stitches, ensuring the new color appears on the hook as the next round begins
  • Stitch marker usage: A stitch marker is recommended to track the beginning of each round as you work in spirals, helping maintain consistent stitch placement

Stitches and Stitch Terminology

This pattern is written using standard American crochet terminology, which is important to note before beginning. The specific stitches employed are not detailed in the provided pattern overview, but the beginner classification suggests the use of fundamental stitches such as single crochet, which is the most common stitch for amigurumi construction.

Materials: Yarn and Tools

Yarn Weight and Fiber: The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn. The designer specifically recommends using a fuzzy yarn to enhance the mouse's tactile appeal and authentic appearance. The recommended yarn is Istex Lètt lopi, which is composed of 100% wool, providing a soft, textured finish ideal for creating a realistic mouse texture.

Important Note on Yarn Selection: The finished size of your mouse is dependent on both the yarn weight you select and your personal crochet tension. If you choose a different yarn than the recommended Istex Lètt lopi, your finished mouse may be larger or smaller than the stated 5.1 inches. Experimenting with eye size is encouraged despite the pattern's recommendations, as this allows customization based on your specific yarn and tension choices.

Tools Required: You will need an appropriate crochet hook sized for worsted weight yarn, a stitch marker for tracking rounds, and fiberfill stuffing to fill the completed mouse body before closing.

Pattern Format and Instructions

This is a downloadable PDF pattern that includes comprehensive written instructions. The pattern features color-coded sections to simplify complex color changes, with more intricate transitions highlighted in different colors for easy reference. Simpler color changes are noted after the round description, requiring you to read the complete line before beginning to work.
