Product Description

As a zoo volunteer I love to knit hats featuring our amazing animals. This adult size pattern includes 2 flamingo hats, Flamingo Parade and Facing Flamingos. Flamingo Parade has 5 flamingo encircling the hat. Facing Flamingos has 2 lovebirds facing each other at the front, back ot both.

I used Red Heart Super Saver® for the samples, though any worsted weight yarn can be substituted. You will need one or two background colors, plus small amounts of two pinks, white, black and tan for each flamingo. The finished circumference is about 20" and fits a woman’s head up to 22"-23".

IMPORTANT: This pattern requires a knowledge of duplicate stitch to embroider the flamingos. Duplicate stitch provides a rich depth which I love. (Fair Isle and Intarsia will not work because the charts include half stitches.) The detailed pattern has large and complete flamingo charts, including stitching paths to follow for the embroidery

Gift tags to print are included.

Flamingo Hats by KittyKnits

What Is Being Made

The Flamingo Hats pattern collection features adult-sized knitted hats designed by MaryAnn C. Davis, inspired by zoo animals. This downloadable PDF includes two distinct flamingo hat designs: the Flamingo Parade Hat, which showcases five flamingos in a circular parade around the crown, and the Facing Flamingo Hat, which features two flamingos positioned facing each other at the center front and/or back of the hat. These hats are suitable for personal wear, gift-giving, or charitable donations, with included printable gift tags for presentation.

Techniques Used

The Flamingo Hats employ colorwork knitting techniques to create the flamingo motifs. The pattern utilizes charted designs that allow knitters to work the animal imagery into the hat structure. The design approach combines solid knit sections with patterned colorwork areas, enabling the flamingos to stand out visually against the background of the hat. This technique requires attention to yarn management when switching between colors and maintaining consistent tension throughout the colorwork sections.

Stitches Used

While specific stitch abbreviations are referenced in the pattern sections, the Flamingo Hats employ fundamental knitting stitches combined with colorwork techniques. The pattern includes charted instructions that guide knitters through the placement of stitches to form the flamingo designs. The construction method involves working in the round to create the circular hat shape, which is a standard approach for hat knitting that eliminates the need for seaming.

Materials

  • Yarn Weight: The pattern accommodates both aran and worsted weight yarns, providing flexibility in yarn selection while maintaining the intended finished size and drape of the adult hat.
  • Yarn Requirements: Specific yardage amounts are detailed in the pattern's yarn requirements section to ensure knitters purchase adequate yarn for their chosen design version.
  • Needles and Notions: The pattern specifies required needles and notions needed to complete the project, listed in the pattern's materials section.
  • Gauge: Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct hat size, and the pattern provides gauge information to help knitters verify their tension before beginning the main project.

Difficulty Level

The Flamingo Hats are rated as an intermediate-level knitting project. This difficulty classification reflects the colorwork elements and charted pattern reading required, making the design suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their technique repertoire beyond basic stockinette stitch projects.
