Product Description
I wasn't quite happy with any of the lace hearts already out there, so I decided to make one the way I wanted it. I needed a chart for it since I'll be including it in a future creation. So I figured I'd make it into a washcloth since that only requires adding a border.
Materials: Approximately 40 yards(36.6m) of Red Heart Super Saver Stripes – Bright Stripe (should be able to use any worsted, afghan or aran weight without issue) Size 8(5mm) needles Gauge: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends. Finished dimensions: 7.5in x 7.5in
Eyelet Heart Washcloth by Jessica G Harlow
What Is Being Made
The Eyelet Heart Washcloth is a decorative and functional dishcloth featuring a lace heart motif. This 7.5 inch by 7.5 inch (19cm x 19cm) square washcloth combines practical utility with elegant design, making it suitable for kitchen use, dishwashing, or as a decorative textile accessory. The design showcases a custom-crafted lace heart pattern created by designer Jessica G Harlow, who developed this version to achieve a specific aesthetic vision not found in existing lace heart patterns.
Craft and Techniques
This project is completed using the knitting craft. The washcloth employs lace knitting techniques to create the eyelet heart design, which involves strategic yarn overs and decreases that form decorative holes and shaping within the fabric. The pattern is presented in two formats for knitter preference: a chart-based visual guide or written row-by-row instructions, allowing knitters to follow whichever method suits their working style. The design is rated at intermediate difficulty, indicating that knitters should have foundational skills in basic stitches and be comfortable reading patterns and executing lace techniques.
Stitches Used
The Eyelet Heart Washcloth utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with lace-specific decreases:
- Knit (k) – the basic knit stitch forming the foundation fabric
- Purl (p) – creates texture and is used in the ribbed edging
- Yarn over (yo) – creates the eyelet holes characteristic of lace patterns
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk) – a left-leaning decrease used in lace shaping
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease for lace construction
- Knit 3 together (k3tog) – a double decrease for more dramatic shaping
- Slip 1 stitch (sl1) – used in conjunction with decreases
- Pass slipped stitch over (psso) – completes certain decrease sequences
Materials and Specifications
The Eyelet Heart Washcloth requires minimal yardage, making it an economical project. Approximately 40 yards (36.6 meters) of yarn in worsted, afghan, or aran weight is needed to complete the finished piece. The pattern specifies Size 8 (5mm) needles as the appropriate tool for this yarn weight. A tapestry needle is required for weaving in yarn ends upon completion. The recommended gauge is 17 stitches by 24 rows in stockinette stitch, which ensures the finished washcloth achieves its intended dimensions. The pattern begins with a cast-on of 29 stitches and includes a ribbed edge created through alternating knit and purl stitches, providing structure and a polished finish to the washcloth.
