Eventide Blanket by Susan Carlson

What is Being Made

The Eventide Blanket is a crochet throw blanket designed by Susan Carlson featuring a sophisticated color-striped construction. This intermediate-level project creates a finished blanket using a repeating color palette of nine coordinated cotton hues, ranging from bright greens through blues to purples, resulting in an ombre-like gradient effect across the fabric.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is worked entirely in crochet, making it ideal for crafters with intermediate skills. The blanket employs a stripe-based construction method where colors are changed systematically across rows to build the visual pattern. The design utilizes a repeating color sequence (colors A through I) that cycles throughout the blanket's height, allowing crafters to create a cohesive, multi-colored throw with intentional color transitions.

Stitches and Stitch Pattern

The Eventide Blanket incorporates shell stitches as a key design element, with shell rows worked at specific intervals within the stripe pattern. The foundation is established using a chain stitch worked in multiples of 6 plus 2 stitches, providing flexibility for customizing blanket width. The pattern structure allows crafters to adjust dimensions by modifying the foundation chain length (in multiples of 6) and working color repeat rows to reach desired height before completing the border.

Materials and Specifications

This downloadable PDF pattern calls for I Love This Cotton by Hobby Lobby, a 100% cotton yarn available in nine distinct colors:

  • Bright Green (A)
  • Apple Green (B)
  • Pistache (C)
  • Aqua (D)
  • Turquoise (E)
  • Pale Denim (F)
  • Stonewash (G)
  • Amethyst (H)
  • Mulberry (I)

Each color requires 2 skeins (3.5oz/100g per skein; 180 yards/165 meters per skein). The sample blanket uses approximately 1700 yards total of yarn across all nine colors. Crochet is worked with an H (5mm) hook, and a tapestry or yarn needle is needed for finishing.

Pattern Notes and Construction Details

The pattern is designed with flexibility in mind. Crafters can customize blanket dimensions by working the foundation chain in multiples of 6 stitches to achieve desired width, then adding 2 additional chains. The color repeat rows can be worked to any desired height before adding the border, making this pattern adaptable to different finished sizes. Important to note: the chain 1 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch in this pattern. The sample blanket required only a very small amount of yarn from the second skein of most colors, with the exception of Aqua (D), which is used for the border and requires fuller yardage.
