Emery Wrap by MsYarn Designs
Project Overview
The Emery Wrap is an intermediate-level knitted shawl designed by Dawn Cottone. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a sophisticated triangular wrap with a wingspan of 73 inches (185cm) and a depth of 16 inches (41cm), making it an elegant accessory suitable for layering or draping.
What is Being Made
The Emery Wrap is a bias-knitted shawl that combines striped sections with decorative lace panels. The triangular construction allows for versatile styling, and the finished piece works as both a functional wrap and a statement accessory. The design features a thoughtful color progression using three distinct yarn colors that work together to create visual interest and depth.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Bias Knitting: The wrap is constructed on the bias, which creates a diagonal grain and allows the fabric to drape beautifully
- Striped Colorwork: Two colors are knitted together and striped throughout the main sections, creating a coordinated pattern without complex stitch techniques
- Lace Panel Integration: Lace sections are offset strategically within the stripe pattern, adding textural variation and visual complexity
- Yarn Carrying: Non-working yarn is carried loosely along the salvage edge during striped sections, eliminating the need for cutting and rejoining yarn
- Blocking: The finished piece is blocked to achieve proper measurements and to open up the lace sections for optimal drape
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
- Garter Stitch: The primary stitch used throughout the striped sections, creating a textured, reversible fabric
- Lace Panel: A 26-row lace pattern is worked in the contrasting color, adding openwork detail and visual interest to the design
Yarn and Materials
The Emery Wrap is designed to work with fingering weight yarn (2 ply construction). The pattern requires three coordinating colors:
- Main Color (MC): 405 yards (370 meters)
- Contrasting Color 1 (CC1): 380 yards (347 meters)
- Contrasting Color 2 (CC2): 380 yards (347 meters)
The sample shown in the pattern was knitted using Midknit Cravings Lush Fingering yarn (100% Merino wool, 437 yards per 100 grams) in the colorways City of Bridges (MC), Broken Slate (CC1), and Afternoon Tea (CC2). Knitters can substitute any fingering weight yarn of similar yardage and fiber content.
Needles and Notions
- Needles: US 3 (3.25mm) circular needle, 24 inches (60cm) in length, or size required to obtain gauge
- Notions: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge
The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches by 38 rows over 4 inches (10cm) in garter stitch, blocked. While gauge is not considered crucial for this design, variations in gauge will affect the final yardage requirements and measurements of the finished wrap. Knitters should swatch and block their gauge swatch to ensure accurate results.
Pattern Construction Details
The Emery Wrap construction follows a specific sequence: the lace panel is worked first using CC2 over rows 1 through 26. After breaking off CC2, the knitter works rows 3 and 4 of the Stripes Section, then repeats rows 1 through 4 of the stripe pattern eleven times to create a total of 23 stripes, alternating between 12 main color stripes and 11 contrasting color stripes. This structured approach creates a balanced, visually appealing design with the lace detail as a focal point.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, the Emery Wrap requires familiarity with basic knitting techniques, the ability to work lace patterns, and comfort managing multiple colors and yarn carrying. The bias construction and color changes make this pattern suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to expand their skillset beyond basic stockinette and garter stitch projects.
