Product Description
This pattern uses the new crocodile stitch technique, and in doing so requires some different way of knitting the bootie. You will start out knitting the bootie normal then once you are ready for the crocodile stitch you will take stitches off the loom, flip the bootie inside out and place the stitches back. This pattern includes a video tutorial to show how you go about making this set of booties. I also include a formula in the pattern to help you change up the size and make on different looms if so desired. There is also photo tutorials in the written pattern as well. I used the universal 3/8" gauge sock loom from Cindwood looms. The bootie is toe up. This is an advanced pattern for loom knitters. It used about one skein of Red Heart super saver stripes yarn. Please feel free to ask questions if you run into them.
Dragon Booties by Scarlett Royale
Project Overview
Dragon Booties are advanced-level knitted slippers designed by independent designer Scarlett Royale. This downloadable PDF pattern provides comprehensive instructions for creating a pair of cozy, dragon-themed booties using loom knitting techniques. The project is ideal for experienced crafters looking to expand their loom knitting skills with a more complex construction method.
What Is Being Made
These are decorative and functional slippers crafted using loom knitting methods. The Dragon Booties project creates wearable footwear with a whimsical dragon theme, suitable for both personal use and gift-giving. The finished booties are constructed using worsted weight yarn and a universal sock loom, resulting in a garment that combines traditional slipper functionality with creative design elements.
Craft and Technique
Dragon Booties are created using loom knitting, a technique that differs from traditional hand knitting by utilizing a specialized loom tool. This method allows crafters to create fabric by wrapping yarn around pegs arranged on the loom surface. Loom knitting is particularly effective for creating tubular or cylindrical shapes, making it well-suited for slipper construction.
The pattern incorporates two primary cast-on methods to begin the project:
- E-Wrap Cast On (EW CO): A foundational loom knitting technique where the working yarn is wrapped around the back of each peg, brought to the front, and wrapped back to the rear. This creates the initial loops that form the base of the fabric.
- Kitchener Cast On (KCO): A more advanced cast-on method that begins at the opposite end of the loom from the starting point. This technique involves wrapping yarn front to back across every peg, moving horizontally from one side of the loom to the other until reaching the starting point, after which all pegs are knitted. This method requires careful attention to peg alignment and yarn tension.
Stitches and Construction Details
The Dragon Booties pattern employs fundamental loom knitting stitches adapted to the sock loom format. After completing approximately 15 rows of knitting, the pattern includes a critical tightening phase that requires precision and attention to detail. This process involves gently tugging on the stitch opposite the yarn tail to locate the starting point, then systematically tightening subsequent loops in a rhythmic pattern.
The tightening technique follows an undulating pattern described as resembling rolling hills or a heartbeat, where the crafter alternates which strand of the next loop to pull. This methodical approach ensures even tension and prevents loose or uneven stitches. Success in this phase depends on lightly testing each strand to confirm it is the correct one before proceeding, ensuring the structural integrity of the finished booties.
Materials and Tools Required
Creating Dragon Booties requires the following materials and equipment:
- Universal Sock Loom: A 3/8" gauge loom specifically designed for sock and small circumference projects. The universal sizing allows flexibility in creating various foot sizes.
- Yarn: Worsted weight yarn in approximately 220 yards total. Worsted weight (also known as aran weight) provides good stitch definition and creates fabric with moderate density, ideal for slippers that require both structure and comfort.
- Looming Hook: A specialized tool used to manipulate loops on the loom pegs and perform the actual knitting motions that create fabric.
- Stitch Markers: Essential tools for tracking progress, marking pattern repeats, and identifying important points in the construction process.
Difficulty Level
Dragon Booties are classified as an advanced project, making them suitable for experienced loom knitters who have mastered basic techniques. The advanced designation reflects the complexity of the cast-on methods, the precision required during the tightening phase, and the overall construction methodology. Crafters new to loom knitting should build foundational skills with simpler projects before attempting this pattern.
Additional Resources
The Dragon Booties pattern includes a video tutorial component that provides visual instruction for the techniques involved. This multimedia approach helps crafters understand the three-dimensional movements required for successful loom knitting, particularly for the more complex Kitchener Cast On and tightening procedures.
