Full sized shawl features a wavy pattern reminiscent of Chrysanthemum flowers, divided by panels of wine glass lace, and edged in an open section that mimics the rounded lines of the waves and segues into a larger leafy pattern with ribbed points.
Mums are thought by the Chinese to grant longevity and strength. Don't know about that, but I do agree with the Japanese who celebrate a festival of happiness to commemorate the flower.
May the pattern bring happiness to both the knitter in the making of it and the recipient in the wearing of it!
Chrysanthemum Beaded Lace Shawl by Susan Pandorf
What Is Being Made
The Chrysanthemum is a beaded lace shawl from designer Susan Pandorf's Garden Variety Collection. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a finished shawl measuring 70 inches wide by 32 inches long, making it an elegant accessory piece suitable for various occasions and styling options.
Design Inspiration and Significance
The Chrysanthemum shawl draws its name and aesthetic from the chrysanthemum flower, a bloom cultivated for over twenty-five hundred years. Historically, the Chinese incorporated chrysanthemums into wines and medicines, valuing the flower for its symbolic associations with longevity and strength. The Latin name chrysanthemum translates to cheerfulness and optimism, and Japan celebrates this flower with a festival of happiness. The flower's remarkable ability to absorb carbon dioxide and transform it into oxygen has even caught the attention of NASA for potential use in space station air purification systems.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level knitting project employs beaded lace techniques, combining decorative beadwork with openwork lace stitching. The pattern features a wave pattern as its primary stitch structure, with each pattern repeat measuring 2.5 inches when blocked. The integration of seed beads throughout the design adds dimensional texture and visual interest to the lace fabric.
Materials and Tools Required
- Yarn: 700 yards of Handmaiden Sea Silk or Mini Maiden in the colorway Origin
- Beads: 3000 size 8 Miyuke seed beads in #2422 silver lined topaz, plus 34 optional accent beads for customization
- Needles: Size 5 (US) knitting needles for the main fabric
- Tools: Size 12 crochet hook and a large eye beading needle for bead application
Yarn Weight and Gauge
This pattern uses 4-ply yarn weight, providing a balanced thickness suitable for creating defined lace stitches while maintaining drape. The gauge is established at one wave pattern repeat equaling 2.5 inches in the blocked finished fabric, which is essential for achieving the intended finished dimensions of the completed shawl.
