Product Description

This long line cardigan/coatigan crochet pattern includes girls sizes age 2-3, 3-4, 4-6, 6-8 & 8-10 years. It requires between 250g and 500g of DK yarn.

It is worked from side-to-side with sleeves crocheted directly into the body and pockets and edging added at the end. It is easy to make with no seams! The only sewing required is sewing the pockets on and loose ends, that’s it!

The stitch combination creates beautiful vertical lines which looks stunning on.

The yarn used is DK but due to the stitches used it creates a lovely thick and warm garment while being lightweight. The edging and cuffs set the cardigan/coatigan off perfectly.

It is the perfect autumn/winter cosy cardigan/coatigan which is a joy to make and turns heads when worn.

I have also got a matching women’s pattern for the same cardigan so please check out my other listings.

You are more than welcome to sell any garment made using this pattern but under no circumstance can this pattern be copied, adapted or sold.

Child's Long Cardigan Crochet Pattern by SiennaIvyCrochet

Project Overview

This downloadable crochet pattern from SiennaIvyCrochet creates a long cardigan, also referred to as a coatigan, designed for children ages 2 through 10. The pattern includes five graduated sizes to accommodate growing children, making it a versatile addition to a child's wardrobe. The finished garment features a classic cardigan construction with a longer length that provides extended coverage.

What Is Being Made

The pattern produces a child's long cardigan suitable for layering or wearing as an outer layer. The coatigan style offers a longer silhouette than traditional cardigans, providing coverage down the torso. The design is constructed to fit children ranging from age 2-3 through age 8-10, with each size requiring progressively more yarn to accommodate larger measurements.

Crochet Techniques Used

This beginner-friendly pattern employs several foundational crochet techniques that build essential skills. The construction utilizes foundation stitches, which allow crocheters to create the base row and first row of stitches simultaneously, eliminating the need for a separate chain foundation. This method streamlines the starting process and is particularly useful for beginners. The pattern also incorporates post stitches, specifically front post double crochet and back post double crochet, which create textured ribbing or surface detail by working around the post of previous stitches rather than into the top loops.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The pattern utilizes the following crochet stitches (in US terminology):

  • Chain (ch): The foundational stitch used to create loops and turning chains throughout the pattern
  • Foundation Half Double Crochet (fhdc): A specialized technique that combines a chain stitch with a half double crochet stitch, allowing the crocheter to build the foundation and first row simultaneously
  • Half Double Crochet Cluster (hdc cluster): A textured stitch created by working multiple half double crochet stitches together, likely used to create visual interest and dimension in the fabric
  • Double Crochet (dc): A taller stitch used for structure and drape in the garment
  • Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc): Worked around the front post of previous stitches to create raised texture
  • Back Post Double Crochet (bpdc): Worked around the back post of previous stitches for dimensional effects
  • Slip Stitch (sl st): Used to join rounds or create invisible seams
  • Double Crochet 2 Together (dc2tog): A decrease stitch that reduces stitch count by combining two stitches into one

Materials and Tools Required

The pattern calls for DK weight yarn, a medium-light yarn weight that creates a fabric with good drape and wearability for children's garments. Yarn quantities vary by size: age 2-3 requires 250g, age 3-4 requires 300g, age 4-6 requires 350g, age 6-8 requires 400g, and age 8-10 requires 500g. Two crochet hooks are needed: a 5mm crochet hook for working the foundation rows and a 4.5mm crochet hook for the remainder of the pattern. The size difference between hooks allows for gauge control and fabric consistency. A tapestry needle is essential for weaving in yarn ends and seaming pieces together if required.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 13 stitches by 12 rows measured over 10 centimeters when working half double crochet clusters with the 4.5mm hook. Achieving the correct gauge is crucial for ensuring the finished cardigan fits properly across the five available sizes. Crocheters should swatch before beginning the full project to verify their tension matches the pattern specifications.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it accessible to crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle a wearable garment project. While the pattern introduces techniques such as foundation stitches and post stitches, these are explained within the pattern instructions, allowing beginners to learn and expand their skillset while completing a practical, finished piece.
