Product Description
• Just knits and purls!
• The yarn, needle, gauge and size noted are what I used for my use whatever yarn and whatever needles you like, but your yarn usage will most likely differ from mine, so just take that into consideration. The most important thing is that you like the fabric of the cloth you’re making.
• Blocking always makes stitches look nicer. Simply soak the cloth in cool water, then gently squeeze the excess water out (never wring!), roll it into a towel and press hard (I stand on it) to really get out the excess, then lay it out and massage the stitches so that your boxes and rows look neat and tidy, and let dry. That’s all blocking is and it makes a world of difference in the look of your finished object.
Building Blocks Dishcloths by Jen Toll Knits
What Is Being Made
Building Blocks is a knitted dishcloth design created by Jen Toll Knits, a free downloadable PDF pattern. This project produces a practical kitchen cloth measuring 6 1/2 inches tall by 6 5/8 inches wide, using approximately 21 grams of yarn. The dishcloth is an ideal beginner-friendly project designed to help knitters practice and reinforce fundamental knitting skills.
Craft and Construction Method
This dishcloth is worked flat on straight needles using basic knitting techniques. The construction method combines two essential knitting stitches to create visual interest and texture. The pattern features a stockinette stitch background with garter ridge blocks worked across the fabric, creating a distinctive block pattern that gives the design its name. This combination of stitch techniques makes the project particularly valuable for beginners who want to practice switching between knit and purl stitches within a single project.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch – forms the foundation of the stockinette background
- Purl stitch – used to create the garter ridge blocks that contrast against the stockinette sections
Yarn and Needles
The pattern calls for DK weight yarn, which is a light worsted or sport-weight yarn suitable for creating fabric with good drape and stitch definition. The sample shown in the pattern used approximately 21 grams of yarn. Jen Toll Knits notes that knitters may substitute any yarn weight and needle size of their choice, though this will affect overall yarn usage. The most important consideration is achieving a fabric texture that the maker enjoys. Needle size should be selected to create appropriate gauge with the chosen yarn.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner level, making it an excellent choice for knitters who have recently learned basic knitting skills. The straightforward construction using only knit and purl stitches allows beginners to build confidence and muscle memory while creating a useful finished object.
