Product Description
INFO ‘Brighton Pebbles’ is named after the favorite beach of the dyer. The softly heathered yarn used in the sample, and this seaside reference also invokes the ocean theme that inspires so many of my designs.
Like the ocean itself, this shawl has a body--an asymmetrical triangle with finished i-cord edges--within which there is endless possibility for variation in mood and texture. Here the fabric features subtle repeating cables separated by columns that combine horizontal and vertical lines, all adding up to a warm, lavish, complex-looking accessory that is nonetheless easy to knit.
’Brighton Pebbles’ is worked flat from the right tip to the left edge. The pattern is fully written out with stitch counts and includes a chart for the repeats.
YARN 3 skeins Rauwerk Original DK, (100% Bavarian merino, 100 gr-240yds/220m). Sample yardage, 700yds/640m in color Quarz. Or any DK weight yarn: approx. 700-809yds (640-740m).

Brighton Pebbles Knit Shawl by Gretha Mensen
Project Overview
Brighton Pebbles is an asymmetrical triangle shawl designed by independent designer Gretha Mensen. Named after the designer's favorite beach, this shawl draws inspiration from the ocean and seaside themes that influence many of Gretha Mensen's creations. The finished accessory combines visual complexity with approachable knitting, making it suitable for intermediate-level knitters seeking a sophisticated layering piece.
What Is Being Made
This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for knitting Brighton Pebbles, an asymmetrical triangular shawl. The shawl features a structured body with finished i-cord edges, creating a defined shape and polished appearance. The design offers flexibility for personal interpretation, allowing knitters to explore variations in mood and texture while following the core pattern structure.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Flat knitting construction: The shawl is worked flat from the right tip to the left edge, allowing for straightforward row-by-row progression
- I-cord edging: Finished i-cord edges provide a professional, defined border around the shawl perimeter
- Cable work: Subtle repeating cables create textural interest and visual depth throughout the fabric
- Stitch combinations: Horizontal and vertical line elements are integrated to build complexity and dimension
Stitches and Pattern Details
Brighton Pebbles features subtle repeating cables separated by columns that combine both horizontal and vertical stitch lines. This interplay of textures creates a warm, lavish appearance despite the straightforward knitting required. The pattern is fully written out with stitch counts for precision, and includes a chart for the repeats, offering knitters both written and visual guidance for executing the cable and column sequences accurately.
Yarn and Materials
Yarn weight: DK weight yarn is required for this project. The sample was knitted using Rauwerk Original DK, a 100% Bavarian merino yarn. Each skein yields 240 yards (220 meters) per 100 grams.
Yardage requirements: The pattern calls for approximately 3 skeins of DK weight yarn. The sample shawl used 700 yards (640 meters) in the Rauwerk Original DK colorway Quarz, a softly heathered tone. Knitters may substitute any DK weight yarn, requiring approximately 700–809 yards (640–740 meters) total.
Needles and tools: A 24-inch circular needle or straight needles (minimum 60 cm length) are required to accommodate the width of the asymmetrical triangle as it expands during knitting.
Difficulty Level
Brighton Pebbles is classified as an intermediate knitting project. While the finished shawl presents a complex, textured appearance, the knitting techniques remain accessible to knitters with foundational skills and experience working with cables and stitch charts.
