Brescul Mittens by Natalie Pelykh

What is Being Made

The Brescul mittens are a pair of hand-knitted mittens designed by Natalie Pelykh and available in three sizes: Small (palm width 7 cm / 2.75 in), Medium (palm width 8.5 cm / 3.4 in), and Large (palm width 10 cm / 4 in). The finished mittens measure 13.7 cm (5.4 in), 16.7 cm (6.6 in), and 19.7 cm (7.8 in) in length respectively, not including the cuff ribbing. These mittens are suitable for intermediate knitters seeking a structured, well-fitting accessory.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Brescul mittens employ several fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern utilizes double-pointed needles (DPNs) for seamless, in-the-round construction, though knitters may substitute circular needles using the magic loop method as an alternative technique. The mittens feature ribbed cuff construction at the opening, which provides elasticity and helps the mittens stay securely on the hand. Stockinette stitch forms the primary fabric throughout the main body of the mittens. The pattern incorporates stitch markers to track pattern repeats and construction sections, and uses a stitch holder or auxiliary yarn to temporarily hold stitches during the mitten shaping process.

Stitches and Pattern Details

The primary stitch used in these mittens is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, refined fabric surface ideal for fitted hand wear. The cuff features ribbing, which alternates knit and purl stitches to create vertical lines of texture and stretch. The pattern is guided by stitch charts that illustrate the complete construction sequence in graphical form. Knitters read these charts from bottom to top, following each round as indicated, which allows for precise shaping and patterning throughout the mitten.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Brescul mittens are designed to be worked in 100% merino wool, a natural fiber known for its softness, breathability, and temperature-regulating properties. The yarn weight is 4-ply (fingering weight), with a yardage of 360 meters per 100 grams (approximately 394 yards per 3.5 ounces). Yarn requirements vary by size: the Small size requires 30 grams (1.1 oz), the Medium size requires 40 grams (1.4 oz), and the Large size requires 50 grams (1.75 oz).

Needles and Tools Required

  • Double-pointed needles (DPNs): Sets in both 2 mm (US0) and 3 mm (US2.5) sizes, or other appropriate sizes to achieve the correct gauge
  • Circular needles: Optional alternative for those preferring the magic loop method instead of DPNs
  • Stitch markers: Four markers to track pattern sections and repeats
  • Tapestry needle: For weaving in yarn ends upon completion
  • Stitch holder or auxiliary yarn: For temporarily securing stitches during construction

Gauge and Finishing

Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit. The pattern specifies a gauge of 30 stitches and 40 rows/rounds over 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 in) when working stockinette stitch on 3 mm (US2.5) needles after blocking and while the fabric is gently stretched. The smaller 2 mm (US0) needles are used for the ribbed cuff to create a tighter, more elastic edge, while the larger 3 mm (US2.5) needles accommodate the main body stitches at the appropriate gauge.
