Product Description
Boomerangle is a long asymmetric triangle designed for experimenting with colour and contrast. The body of the shawl is worked sideways, alternating between garter and stockinette to create a slightly shot fabric, which are intersected by strong slip stitch lines.
It is ideal for showing off two contrasting or complementary skeins, or try a solid paired with a variegated, speckled or gradient yarn for dynamic results. It is shown here in two dappled gradient yarns which were swapped at the halfway point.
Adaptable to any yarn weight, and any yardage, by adjusting needle size to suit your preferred gauge.
Pattern rows are worked on RS only, and only one colour is worked at a time. Can be worked entirely from written pattern, or from chart with some notes.

Boomerangle Asymmetric Triangle Shawl by Nim Teasdale
What Is Being Made
Boomerangle is a long asymmetric triangle shawl designed by Nim Teasdale as a versatile project for exploring colour and contrast in knitting. The shawl features an elongated triangular silhouette that works sideways, making it an ideal accessory for showcasing the interplay between two contrasting or complementary yarn skeins, or for creating dynamic visual effects when paired with solid, variegated, speckled, or gradient yarns.
Sizing and Yardage
The Boomerangle shawl is adaptable to any yardage of yarn ranging from heavy fingering to Aran weight. The pictured example uses 420 metres (460 yards) of yarn and measures 165 centimetres by 65 centimetres (65 inches by 25 inches) after blocking, demonstrating the finished dimensions achievable with this particular yardage and yarn weight.
Knitting Techniques
This pattern employs a sideways construction method, allowing knitters to build the asymmetric triangle shape by working horizontally across the fabric. The design strategically alternates between garter stitch and stockinette stitch sections to create textural variation and visual interest throughout the shawl body.
Stitches and Stitch Details
- Garter stitch — creates a textured, bumpy fabric that contrasts with smoother sections
- Stockinette stitch — produces the smooth, classic knit appearance that alternates with garter sections
- Slipped stitches — used to create strong, defined lines that intersect the alternating stitch patterns, adding graphic definition and visual structure to the design
Materials and Gauge
Boomerangle is worked using needles and yarn weight that vary based on the specific yarn chosen for the project. The pictured shawl was knit using 4mm (US size 6) needles with Gobsmacked Merino DK yarn, which is a medium-weight yarn suitable for creating drape and definition in shawl construction. Gauge and needle size should be adjusted according to the weight of yarn selected, ensuring proper fabric characteristics and finished dimensions.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it accessible to knitters new to shawl construction while remaining engaging for more experienced makers exploring colour work and stitch variation.
