Big Jim Shawl by Justyna Lorkowska

What is Being Made

Big Jim is a knitted shawl designed by Justyna Lorkowska. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a generous triangular shawl measuring approximately 172.5 cm (69 inches) wide and 80 cm (32 inches) long at the center spine, without fringe. The substantial dimensions make it suitable for wrapping and layering, offering both warmth and style.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is created using the knitting craft. The shawl is worked flat using traditional knitting needles, making it an accessible project for knitters seeking to expand their skills beyond basic garment construction.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used

Big Jim employs a range of intermediate-level knitting stitches and techniques to create texture and shaping:

  • Knit (k) – the fundamental knit stitch forming the base fabric
  • Knit two together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
  • Knit through back loop (ktbl) – creates twisted stitches for textural variation
  • Make one left (M1L) – a left-leaning increase worked by lifting the loop between stitches from the front and knitting into the back of the loop
  • Make one right (m1R) – a right-leaning increase worked by lifting the loop between stitches from the front
  • Knit front and back (kfb) – an increase that creates two stitches from one by knitting through both the front and back loop
  • Knit front, back, and front (kfbf) – an increase creating three stitches from one stitch
  • K2rb (knit two rows below) – an advanced stitch technique inserting the needle into a stitch two rows below, drawing a loop through loosely, then passing it over the newly knitted stitch
  • Cable needle (cn) – used for cable stitches that add dimensional texture

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. Knitters should be comfortable with basic stitches and ready to work with increases, decreases, cable techniques, and stitch manipulation across multiple rows. The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations and requires attention to stitch placement and shaping sequences.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Big Jim is designed for DK weight yarn, a lightweight yarn that creates fabric with good drape suitable for shawls.

Yarn Requirements: The pattern calls for Clara Yarn Shetland 1.0, a yarn composed of 100% Shetland wool. The yardage is 274 meters (300 yards) per 92-gram skein. Knitters will need 2 skeins of the main color (MC) and 1 skein of a contrasting color (CC). The sample shown uses Moorit for the main color and Mooskit for the contrasting color.

Needles and Notions: The pattern requires knitting needles appropriate for DK weight yarn, a cable needle for cable work, stitch markers (m) to track pattern repeats and shaping points, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends.

Pattern Notes

The pattern includes comprehensive abbreviations and uses standard knitting notation. Markers are essential for tracking the pattern structure and increases/decreases throughout the shawl. The use of both main color and contrasting color yarn adds visual interest and allows for creative color blocking within the shawl design.
