The red stripe in the picture was created by knitting these three rows: Row 1: Attach contrast color, *K1, Skip 1, repeat from * to end of row or round. Row 2: knit all stitches (in contrast color), cut contrast color yarn. Row 3: Attach main color, *Slip 1, K1, repeat from * to end of row or round.
