Winter Wishes Quilt 2 – Free Downloadable Quilting Pattern by Heidi Pridemore for Windham Fabrics

This free downloadable PDF pattern is the second quilt design in the Winter Wishes collection, featuring fabrics by Whistler Studios and distributed by Windham Fabrics. The pattern was designed and written by Heidi Pridemore of The Whimsical Workshop. It produces a finished quilt measuring 48 inches by 60 inches, making it an ideal lap quilt, throw, or holiday accent piece. Rated as a beginner-friendly project, this pattern is a wonderful introduction to quilting with a festive, seasonal theme centered around classic Christmas imagery including snowflakes, ornaments, presents, stars, and bows.

About the Quilt Design

The Winter Wishes Quilt 2 is a holiday-themed quilted throw that combines traditional patchwork piecing with fusible appliqué to create a charming, whimsical Christmas scene. The design incorporates a variety of fabric prints from the Winter Wishes collection, layering geometric pieced blocks with decorative appliquéd motifs such as ornaments, stars, bows, and wrapped presents. The result is a richly detailed quilt that captures the warmth and joy of the holiday season while remaining approachable for quilters who are new to the craft.

Techniques Used

  • Patchwork piecing: The quilt top is constructed by cutting and sewing together fabric strips and rectangles of varying sizes, a foundational quilting technique that creates structure and visual interest through the arrangement of different fabrics and prints.
  • Fusible web appliqué: Decorative motifs including ornaments, a star, a bow, and present ribbons are cut from fabric, backed with fusible web, and then ironed onto the quilt top before being stitched in place. This technique allows for precise, clean shapes and is particularly well suited to beginners because it eliminates the need for hand-turned edges.
  • Strip cutting and sub-cutting: The pattern makes extensive use of width-of-fabric (WOF) strips that are then sub-cut into specific rectangles and squares, a highly efficient cutting method that reduces waste and speeds up construction.
  • Template-based cutting: Several appliqué shapes, including numbered ornament styles (referred to as #1 Ornaments, #2 Ornaments, and #3 ribbon details), are cut using pattern templates provided within the PDF, ensuring consistency across repeated motifs.

Stitches and Construction Methods

  • Straight stitch piecing: All patchwork blocks and strip units are joined using a standard straight machine stitch, typically sewn at a quarter-inch seam allowance as is conventional in quilting.
  • Appliqué stitching: Once fusible web motifs are ironed onto the quilt top, they are secured with machine stitching around their edges, which may include a straight stitch, zigzag stitch, or blanket stitch depending on the quilter's preference and machine capabilities.

Materials and Fabric Requirements

The pattern calls for fourteen distinct fabrics from the Winter Wishes collection by Whistler Studios for Windham Fabrics, plus a backing fabric. Each fabric is identified by its official Windham Fabrics SKU number and colorway name. The full fabric list includes the following:
