Product Description
This is the forth in my washcloth series! I have a new one coming out every month. These have been designed to help crocheters expand on their skill set by playing with stitches and stitch designs that may be new to them while creating something that is useful.
This design uses the puff stitch.
Washcloth 04 Blueberry by Seona Roberts
What is Being Made
The Washcloth 04 Blueberry is the fourth design in Seona Roberts' washcloth series, created as part of the "Honouring M.E." collection. This is a square washcloth measuring 28cm x 28cm (approximately 11 inches x 11 inches), designed for everyday use in the kitchen or bathroom. The project introduces crocheters to the puff stitch, a textured stitch that adds visual interest and tactile dimension to the finished piece.
Craft and Techniques
This project is worked entirely in crochet, making it an ideal choice for beginner-level crocheters. The primary technique featured is the puff stitch, which is described as a relatively simple stitch to master while providing substantial texture to the fabric. The puff stitch creates a dimensional, bumpy surface that is both visually appealing and practical for a washcloth, as the texture aids in cleaning. The pattern uses standard US crochet terminology and includes abbreviations for common stitches.
Stitches Used
The Washcloth 04 Blueberry incorporates the following crochet stitches:
- Chain stitch (ch) – Used to create the foundation and throughout the pattern
- Slip stitch (ss) – Used for joining and finishing
- Single crochet (sc) – A fundamental stitch used in the construction
- Double crochet (dc) – Provides structure and height variation
- Treble (tr) – Creates taller stitches for pattern interest
- Puff stitch – The signature stitch of this design, creating the textured surface
The pattern notes that the chain-2 at the start of each row does not count as a stitch, which is important for maintaining proper stitch counts throughout the project.
Materials and Tools
The Washcloth 04 Blueberry is designed to be worked with 100g of 100% cotton yarn in worsted weight, aran weight, or 10ply. The pattern specifies KnitPicks Dishie as the yarn used in the original design. A 5mm crochet hook is required for this project. Additionally, a needle for weaving in ends is needed to finish the washcloth after completion. The use of cotton yarn makes this washcloth highly absorbent and durable for repeated washing and use.
Pattern Flexibility
The pattern includes helpful guidance for customization: if adjusting the size of the washcloth, crocheters should make the initial chain using any uneven number of stitches. This flexibility allows makers to create larger or smaller versions while maintaining the pattern's integrity and stitch structure.
