Product Description

This pattern includes two different bee designs in one! Blossom is a Queen Bee who is soft and cuddly but firm enough to stand up. She measures 5" tall (including her antenna). Clover is a teeny 2" bee who is perfect both for little hands to squish and for bigger folks to "ooh" and "ahh" over.

You can make Blossom and Clover bigger or smaller just by changing the yarn weight and/or hook size.

Blossom the Queen Bee and Clover the Baby Bee Amigurumi

What is Being Made

This pattern set features two crocheted amigurumi bee toys designed by Deanne Shoyer of Small But Kinda Mighty: Blossom the Queen Bee and Clover the Baby Bee. These are stuffed toy figures created using the amigurumi technique, a Japanese method of crocheting small, three-dimensional stuffed animals and creatures. The pattern allows crafters to make both a larger queen bee character and a smaller baby bee companion, offering a complete set of coordinating toys.

Crochet Techniques Used

This intermediate-level crochet project employs several fundamental amigurumi construction techniques. The pattern utilizes the magic ring (also called magic loop, magic circle, or adjustable ring) as the starting method for creating seamless, tight centers. Crafters will work in continuous rounds to build the three-dimensional forms of both bee characters. The pattern incorporates color changes using multiple yarn colors to create distinct bee features, with main color yarn in yellow for the body, contrasting color yarn 1 in black for stripes and details, and contrasting color yarn 2 in white for additional accents.

Stitches Used

The stitches employed in this amigurumi pattern include:

  • Chain (ch) - used for creating foundation chains and connecting elements
  • Single crochet (sc) - the primary stitch for building the body and creating dense, tight fabric suitable for stuffed toys
  • Increase (inc) - worked as two single crochet stitches in the same stitch to expand the fabric and create curved shapes
  • Single crochet 2 together (sc2tog) - used for decreasing stitches to shape and close the amigurumi pieces
  • Back loop only (BLO) - a technique where stitches are worked through only the back loop to create texture and definition
  • Slip stitch (sl st) - used for joining rounds and finishing edges

Materials and Tools

The pattern requires DK and worsted weight yarn in three colors: yellow (main color), black (contrasting color 1), and white (contrasting color 2). Crochet hooks vary by bee size: a 3.75 mm (F) crochet hook is used for Blossom the Queen Bee, while a smaller 3.5 mm (E) crochet hook is used for Clover the Baby Bee, allowing the baby bee to be appropriately smaller in scale. Additional materials include 12 mm safety eyes for Blossom and 7.5 mm safety eyes for Clover to create the bees' faces, polyester filling for stuffing the amigurumi pieces, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and assembling the components. This pattern was designed in August 2018 by Deanne Shoyer and is presented as a downloadable PDF format suitable for intermediate crocheters.
