Every quilt in this collection comes as a free PDF: cutting charts, block diagrams, yardage tables and assembly instructions, ready to print on A4 or read from a screen beside the machine. How the patterns are organised, and where to start

Think in terms of finished size and block complexity rather than style. A table runner or a 90cm baby quilt gives you the entire quilting process — cutting, piecing, basting, quilting, binding — at a size you can finish in a weekend or two. Once that's behind you, scaling up to a lap quilt is mostly a matter of repeating what you already know. Save curved piecing, paper-pieced points and appliqué for your third or fourth project.

• Triangles: half-square triangles, flying geese, pinwheels, star blocks.
• Strip piecing: jelly roll quilts and log cabins, fast and very forgiving.

Fabric, wadding and backing

Quilting cotton is the standard for a reason: it presses to a crisp seam, doesn't stretch on the bias more than you can manage, and comes in coordinated ranges that take the guesswork out of colour. Pre-cuts save cutting time — a charm pack is forty 5in squares, a layer cake ten-inch squares, a jelly roll 2.5in strips — and many patterns here are written specifically for them. For wadding, low-loft cotton or an 80/20 cotton-polyester blend gives the flat, softly crinkled finish most people picture; high-loft polyester gives more puff and shadow in the quilting lines. Cut backing and wadding at least 10cm larger than the quilt top on every side to allow for take-up during quilting.

Tools that make the difference

A rotary cutter with a fresh blade, a self-healing mat and a 6½in x 24in acrylic ruler will improve your accuracy more than any amount of patience. Add a quarter-inch presser foot, a walking foot for straight-line quilting, curved safety pins or basting spray, plenty of pressing time with a dry iron, and a seam ripper you are not too proud to use. A scant quarter-inch seam is the single most important habit in quilting: sew a test strip, press it, and measure before you cut into your good fabric.

Quilting, binding and finishing

Straight-line quilting with a walking foot suits modern designs and is the easiest place to begin. Free-motion quilting takes practice on sandwiched scraps first. Hand quilting with a hoop and short between needles is slower and lovely. Bind with 2½in strips joined on the diagonal, machine it to the front and hand-finish to the back with a blind stitch, or stitch in the ditch from the front if you prefer speed. Don't forget a label with the date and the maker's name on the back.

Washing and care

Wash a finished quilt cold on a gentle cycle with a colour catcher the first time, especially if you've used saturated reds. Tumble dry on low if you want the crinkled, well-loved look. Store folded loosely in cotton, not plastic, and refold along different lines occasionally so the creases don't set.
