Product Description
ZomBee is based out of my first amigurumi design, Heimlich the bee, found free on by blog. The name comes from merging Zombie Bee (what I initially wanted to call it). ZomBee has a much better ring to it, don’t you think?
ZomBee Amigurumi Crochet Pattern
What Is Being Made
The ZomBee Amigurumi is a small stuffed toy creature designed by Morine of Morine's Shop. This original crochet pattern creates a whimsical zombie bee character that measures approximately 3.5 inches tall and 4 inches long when completed. The finished toy is suitable for display, play, or as a decorative handmade gift.
Craft and Techniques
This project uses the crochet technique to construct the amigurumi toy. Amigurumi is a Japanese craft method of crocheting small, stuffed three-dimensional figures. The ZomBee pattern is worked in continuous rounds, a technique where you spiral upward without joining each round, creating a seamless tubular structure. This method is efficient and produces a smooth, professional appearance in finished toys.
The pattern incorporates embroidery as a finishing technique. Black and red thread are used to embroider details that bring character and expression to the completed bee. Additionally, the toy features two 12 mm black safety noses that are attached during assembly, a standard component in amigurumi construction for creating realistic facial features.
Stitches Used
The ZomBee Amigurumi pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches appropriate for beginner-level crafters:
- Chain (ch) – the foundation stitch used to begin the pattern
- Single Crochet (sc) – the primary stitch for building the body and structure
- Increase (inc) – used to expand the width of sections by working multiple stitches into the same stitch
- Decrease (dec) – used to reduce stitches and shape the toy
- Slip Stitch (ss) – used to join rounds and finish sections
- Fasten Off (fo) – the final step to secure and complete the work
Materials and Tools
The ZomBee pattern requires DK weight yarn in three colors: jungle green (10 yards), black (3 yards), and light grey (5 yards). DK yarn, also known as double knitting weight, is a medium-weight yarn that works well for amigurumi projects, providing good stitch definition and durability in small toys.
Essential tools and supplies include a 3.5 mm crochet hook, which is the appropriate hook size for DK weight yarn. Additional materials needed are toy stuffing to fill the finished form, a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends and embroidering details, a stitch marker to track your position in continuous rounds, scissors for cutting yarn, and small pieces of black and red thread for embroidery work.
Skill Level and Difficulty
This pattern is classified as beginner level, making it an excellent introduction to amigurumi for new crocheters. The stitches required are basic and fundamental to crochet, and the continuous round technique, while requiring attention, is straightforward to learn. The pattern notes recommend reading through the entire instructions before beginning to ensure familiarity with all steps.
Pattern Notes
Exact gauge is not crucial for this toy pattern, though the designer recommends checking your gauge and adjusting as needed to achieve the correct finished sizing.
