Product Description

The Zoel Scarf is a very soft and delicate scarf knit using laceweight mohair yarn. It is a great pattern to learn some basics of lace knitting or to get familiar with using this type of yarn. Because of the simple two-row lace, this pattern not only lets the yarn shine but also makes for a wonderful portable project. Pair it with the Zoel Hat to warm up a cold day in autumn or winter. Stitches used include knit, purl, yo, k2tog and the double decrease sl1-k2tog-psso. The pattern is suitable for the beginning lace knitter.

The sample was knit in Lana Grossa Lace Pearls. A substitute yarn is shown below.

Zoel Scarf by Susanne Visch

What is Being Made

The Zoel Scarf is a knitted lace accessory designed by Susanne Visch. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a lightweight, elegant scarf suitable for intermediate knitters. The finished scarf showcases delicate lace patterning that is both visually striking and wearable for everyday use.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is created using the knitting craft. Knitting is a textile creation method that uses two needles to interlace yarn into interconnected loops, building fabric row by row from the bottom up. The Zoel Scarf employs laceweight yarn, which is one of the finest yarn categories available, allowing for intricate, open lacework patterns that create an airy, delicate finished fabric.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes several fundamental and decorative knitting stitches to create its lace design:

  • Knit stitch (k): The basic stitch that forms the foundation of the fabric
  • Purl stitch (p): The reverse of the knit stitch, used to create texture and pattern variation
  • Yarn over (yo): A stitch that creates deliberate holes in the fabric, essential for lace patterns
  • Knit two together (k2tog): A decrease stitch that reduces the stitch count by one
  • Double decrease (sl1, k2tog, psso): A more pronounced decrease that removes two stitches at once. This technique involves slipping one stitch as if to knit, knitting two stitches together, then passing the slipped stitch over the stitch just knitted, creating a centered decrease ideal for lace shaping

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Zoel Scarf pattern calls for 35 grams of Lana Grossa Lace Pearls yarn, which provides approximately 192 meters (209 yards) of fiber. This laceweight yarn is composed of 40% wool, 26% polyamide, 18% alpaca, 18% mohair, and 8% glass beads. The glass bead content adds subtle sparkle and weight to the delicate fabric. The yarn is packaged at 137 meters (149 yards) per 25 gram skein. The pattern notes that any laceweight kid mohair and silk-type yarn of similar characteristics may be substituted for comparable results.

Needles and Tools

The pattern requires knitting needles in size 4.5 mm (US #7) in your preferred style, whether straight, circular, or double-pointed needles. Additional tools needed include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and six stitch markers to track pattern repeats and construction points throughout the knitting process.

Gauge and Sizing

Gauge is noted as not critical with this design, offering flexibility for knitters. However, for reference, the example scarf measures 16 stitches and 20 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) in the lace pattern after blocking. The pattern begins with 36 cast-on stitches and includes initial garter stitch rows before transitioning into the lace pattern proper.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle lace construction. The combination of yarn overs and decreases requires attention to stitch counts and pattern reading, but the techniques themselves are standard knitting methods.
