Product Description
“York” is a stranded color-work hat with a twisted rib. Each hat is knitted using a total of four colors...one of them a pop of bright neon pink! The hats pictured above have different background colors but ALL have the same contrasting colors. This is an example of how one modification to a color palate can change your perspective. The yarn is Big Bad Wool weepaca which is available in a wide variety of tints, tones, and shades!
The above hats each use one skein of the main color, and all three hats can be knitted with a single skein of each contrasting color.
“York” is also a small town in western Alabama founded in 1838.

York Stranded Colorwork Hat by Amy Opie
What Is Being Made
York is a knitted hat featuring stranded colorwork design combined with a twisted rib construction. This intermediate-level project creates a finished Adult Small-Medium sized hat using a vibrant four-color palette that includes a striking neon pink accent. The design demonstrates how color selection dramatically impacts the visual appearance of the same pattern, with the ability to customize the main background color while maintaining consistent contrasting colors throughout.
Knitting Techniques Used
This hat employs stranded colorwork, a technique where multiple yarn colors are carried across the back of the work to create patterned designs on the fabric surface. The York hat combines this colorwork method with twisted rib construction, which adds textural interest and structure to the piece. The hat is knitted in the round, a common approach for seamless hat construction that requires working with circular needles or double-pointed needles.
Stitches and Construction Details
The pattern begins with a cast-on of 100 stitches using a contrasting color on smaller needles. After the initial cast-on, the main color is joined and the twisted rib pattern is established as the foundation of the hat. The twisted rib provides elasticity and helps the hat maintain its shape around the wearer's head.
Yarn and Materials
- Yarn: Big Bad Wool weepaca or similar light worsted/DK weight yarn in four colors total
- Yarn Weight: DK or worsted weight options
- Yardage Efficiency: One skein of the main background color per hat, with all three contrasting colors (including the neon pink accent) achievable from a single skein each
- Needles: Smaller needles for the ribbed cuff section; appropriate circular or double-pointed needles for knitting in the round
Design Inspiration
The York hat is named after York, a small town in western Alabama founded in 1838, connecting the pattern to American heritage and geography.
