Product Description

One of the reasons I started designing was because I wanted to provide more beautiful patterns to those who craft for good causes. The Wrapped in Lace PICC Line Cover speaks specifically to that goal. This pattern calls for cotton thread so it can easily washed in cold water, making it not only pretty, but convenient for the person receiving it. Since cancer, or other forms of IV therapy know no age limits, this PICC line cover can be adjusted for all ages and sizes. You will need the person’s upper arm measurements before starting this piece, but I have included some averages, should you plan to make these to donate to charity organizations.

This crochet pattern is available for free on my website or you can download it here as a print-optimized, ad-free PDF for your convenience.

Wrapped in Lace PICC Line Cover by Kirsten Holloway

Project Overview

The Wrapped in Lace PICC Line Cover is a delicate crocheted accessory designed to protect and beautify medical PICC line tubing. This intermediate to advanced crochet project combines functional design with decorative lace elements, creating a practical garment for medical patients who wish to add a touch of elegance to their necessary medical equipment.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a crocheted cover specifically sized and shaped to wrap around and protect a PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter) line. The finished cover serves both aesthetic and protective purposes, allowing wearers to conceal medical tubing while maintaining accessibility for medical care. The lace construction provides breathability and comfort during extended wear.

Crochet Techniques Used

The Wrapped in Lace PICC Line Cover employs several foundational and intermediate crochet techniques to achieve its delicate appearance. The pattern utilizes 3-dc cluster stitches, which involve working three double crochet stitches together in the same stitch to create textured focal points. A specialized technique called hdc in the 3rd loop is used, requiring crocheters to work stitches into the third loop of half double crochet stitches from the previous round rather than the standard two loops, creating a distinctive dimensional effect. This advanced loop-working method adds visual interest and structural integrity to the lace pattern.

Stitches Used

  • Slip stitch (sl st) — used for joining rounds and creating seamless transitions
  • Single crochet (sc) — provides a tight, dense base for structural support
  • Half double crochet (hdc) — creates medium-weight fabric with moderate drape
  • Double crochet (dc) — produces taller stitches for lace openwork and visual interest
  • Chain (ch) — forms the foundation and creates open spaces within the lace pattern
  • 3-dc cluster — a custom stitch combination that groups three double crochets together for textured embellishment

Materials and Specifications

This project requires Aunt Lydia's #10 crochet thread in a color of the maker's choice, with a yardage requirement of 150-200 yards1.5mm steel crochet hook is specified, though the pattern notes that crocheters should use whichever hook size is necessary to obtain the correct gauge for their tension and thread choice. Steel hooks are preferred for thread work as they provide the precision and durability needed for working with fine materials. Optional materials include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and a 1-yard length of ¼" satin ribbon, which can be incorporated as a decorative and functional finishing element.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate to advanced, this pattern is best suited for crocheters with solid foundational skills and experience working with fine thread. The combination of specialty stitches, the 3rd loop technique, and cluster work requires attention to detail and stitch consistency. Working with #10 thread on a 1.5mm hook demands precision and good eyesight or magnification, making this project more challenging than beginner patterns.
