Product Description
The inexplicable delights of the first snow are captured in the double knitting stitches of Winter Chic. Each year, I wait for a pre-sunrise wet nose wake-up call from Puddles indicating that the moment is ripe - the cold bitter frost will be met with joyful snow showers… that stick. Regardless of the hour, this must be celebrated! Bundling up in pajamas, snow boots, and Winter Chic we alternate between rambunctious play to stillness, marveling as the world transforms. As each flake drops and accumulates bathing the world in white, so the pattern in Winter Chic transitions from one color to the other at ever increasing intervals of joyful stitching.
The tech edited and test knit pattern is fully written and charted with 3 photo tutorials.
*Gauge:*18 sts and 24 rows over 4”/ 10cm in double knitting Stockinette stitch. Note: exact gauge is not critical to this design. Gauge variations may impact final size and yardage requirements.
Winter Chic Knitted Headwear by KnitEcoChic
Project Overview
Winter Chic is an intermediate-level knitted headwear design that celebrates the magic of fresh snowfall through dynamic colorwork. This downloadable knitting pattern captures the joy of winter's first snow by translating visual transformation into textile form, using double knitting techniques to create a piece that transitions between colors at increasing intervals as you progress through the pattern.
What Is Being Made
Winter Chic is a knitted headwear accessory featuring decorative I-cord ties. The finished piece measures approximately 25 inches (63.5 cm) around the circumference and 18 inches (45.5 cm) in height. The design includes two I-cord components: a top tie and a bottom I-cord. The bottom I-cord is optional, and crafters may choose to substitute roving or chunky yarn of equivalent length as an alternative embellishment.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Double Knitting: The primary technique featured in Winter Chic, double knitting creates a reversible fabric with two distinct color patterns that can be displayed on either side of the work. This technique allows for intricate colorwork without the bulk of traditional Fair Isle or stranded knitting.
- I-Cord Construction: The pattern includes instructions for creating I-cords, a tubular knitting technique that produces a cord-like trim. I-cords are worked in the round on a small number of stitches and are commonly used for decorative edgings, ties, and embellishments on knitted garments.
- Color Transitions: The pattern employs strategic color changes at increasing intervals throughout the piece, creating a visual narrative that mirrors the accumulation of snowflakes and the gradual transformation of the landscape.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
While specific stitch abbreviations are referenced in the pattern instructions (including "CO" for cast on and "kyok"), the foundational stitch work relies on the double knitting method. Double knitting combines knit and purl stitches worked in alternating colors to build the reversible colorwork structure. The I-cord components utilize basic knitting stitches worked in a small circular construction to create the finished cord trim.
Materials and Specifications
- Yarn: Malabrigo Verano is the featured yarn choice, with approximately 3 to 4 skeins required to complete the project. Malabrigo Verano is a DK weight yarn, offering a balance between drape and structure suitable for headwear applications.
- Yarn Weight: DK (Double Knit) weight yarn provides a medium gauge that works well for creating defined colorwork patterns and structured headwear that maintains its shape.
- Needles: US 5 (3.75mm) needles are specified for the main pattern work, appropriate for DK weight yarn and the double knitting technique.
- Yarn Alternatives: For the optional bottom I-cord, crafters may substitute roving or chunky yarn of comparable length, offering flexibility in material selection and texture variation.
Difficulty Level
Winter Chic is rated as an intermediate-level pattern, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore more advanced techniques. The double knitting method and color transitions require attention to stitch consistency and color management, though the pattern provides structured guidance for successful completion.
Designer and Format
