Product Description
Windham Fabrics In Orbit Quilt Pattern
Project Overview
In Orbit is an intermediate-level quilting project designed by Natalie Crabtree and featuring the Indigo Dyed fabric collection by Windham Fabrics. This finished quilt measures 78" x 78", making it an ideal size for a large throw blanket or bed quilt. The pattern is available as a free downloadable PDF from Windham Fabrics.
Design and Construction Technique
The In Orbit quilt employs raw edge appliqué as its primary construction method, a technique that creates a modern, graphic aesthetic while maintaining intermediate-level accessibility. Rather than turning under fabric edges for traditional appliqué, raw edge appliqué allows cut edges to remain exposed, giving the finished quilt a contemporary appearance.
The design incorporates circular appliqué elements in varying sizes, creating a dynamic orbital or celestial theme. The pattern uses both full circles and half circles in two different scales, allowing for layered visual interest and dimensional composition across the quilt surface.
Appliqué Templates and Preparation
The pattern requires preparation of multiple appliqué templates:
- Large Circle Templates: Eight pieces to be traced and cut
- Small Circle Templates: Eight pieces to be traced and cut
- Large Half Circle Templates: Two pieces to be traced and cut
- Small Half Circle Templates: Two pieces to be traced and cut
These templates are traced onto the smooth side of fusible web, a heat-activated adhesive material that bonds fabric pieces together when pressed. After tracing, each fusible web template is cut just outside the traced line to ensure proper sizing. The finished appliqué patch sizes match the printed template dimensions provided in the pattern.
Fabric and Materials
The In Orbit pattern is designed to showcase the Indigo Dyed fabric line by Windham Fabrics. The cutting instructions specify which of the nine designated fabrics (Fabrics A through I) should be fused to each circle template and in what quantities, allowing crafters to create a coordinated color scheme using the designer's intended palette. Fusible web is the primary adhesive material used to attach appliqué pieces to the quilt foundation.
Skill Level and Pattern Support
Classified as an intermediate skill project, In Orbit is suitable for quilters with foundational knowledge of piecing and basic appliqué techniques. Windham Fabrics maintains pattern updates in their free projects section on windhamfabrics.com, and crafters are encouraged to check for any revisions before beginning their project. Customer support is available through Windham Fabrics for questions or clarification during the quilting process.
