Product Description
The pattern has an easy to remeber 3 row pattern. These 3 rows will be approx 1.5" after blocking. I have made the shawl with a 40" drop but you can make it as long as you like. The edging is made on 2 rows.
There is no gauge as such but if you crochet tightly you may want to use a 5mm hook. Block your shawl larger than you require as it will rebound a bit when unpinned do to the nature of this type of yarn. You don't have to block this shawl but I find it makes the pattered row stand out more.
I used a 4mm hook and 400g Robin Picasso DK for this project. Any double knit should be suitable.
Whispers of Colour Shawl by Eclectic Yarncrafts
Project Overview
The Whispers of Colour Shawl is a beginner-friendly crochet design that creates an elegant, lightweight wrap perfect for layering. This downloadable PDF pattern guides crafters through a structured approach to shawl construction using fundamental crochet techniques combined with decorative shell stitch motifs.
What Is Being Made
This project produces a crocheted shawl designed with repeating shell stitch patterns. The shawl features a structured row-by-row construction that builds visual interest through the strategic placement of shells and open spaces, creating an airy, elegant drape suitable for various occasions.
Crochet Techniques Used
The Whispers of Colour Shawl employs several core crochet techniques appropriate for beginners:
- Shell Stitch: The primary decorative element, created by working multiple treble crochets separated by chain spaces within a single stitch or space
- Treble Crochet (Tc): Used extensively throughout the pattern to build height and structure
- Double Crochet (Dc): Employed as spacing and transition stitches between shell motifs
- Chain Stitches (Ch): Used to create openwork spaces and turn chains between rows
- Blocking: The pattern notes that blocking is not critical for fit, allowing flexibility in finishing
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The pattern utilizes a repeating sequence of stitches that creates visual rhythm:
- Shells constructed as Tc, Ch 3, Tc combinations placed strategically within previous row spaces
- Chain-3 spaces between structural elements for openwork effect
- Double crochet stitches positioned to connect shell groups and maintain pattern alignment
- Chain-4 turn sequences at row ends to establish proper height for subsequent rows
- Five-treble crochet clusters worked into double crochet stitches with careful hook placement to minimize hole formation
Materials and Tools
The Whispers of Colour Shawl is worked with DK weight yarn, specifically 400g of Robin Picasso DK in shade 2841. A 4.50mm crochet hook is used to work the yarn. The DK weight provides a balance between drape and stitch definition, making it ideal for shawl construction where both structure and flow are desired. The generous yardage allows for a substantial finished piece with good coverage.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner project, the Whispers of Colour Shawl is accessible to crocheters new to the craft while still offering visual sophistication. The pattern relies on fundamental stitches—treble crochets, double crochets, and chain stitches—combined in a logical, repeating structure. The emphasis on blocking flexibility further reduces pressure on achieving perfect tension, making this an encouraging first shawl project.
