Product Description
The Wheatsheaf Aran Socks can be knitted at a loose or tighter gauge/tension and feature ribbing on the cuff, back of the leg, heel flap and sole to ensure a nice fit for many foot sizes. The socks are made for lounging, wearing around the house instead of slippers and relaxing. They’re an attractive sock for lazy days and nights by the fire. The cuff is ribbed (K2, P2) and has a good stretch to it. The socks are worked cuff-down ending at the toes which are grafted with Kitchener stitch. I worked my socks using circular needles and magic loop, but you can use dpns if you wish. Please use only one needle for the instep section of the sock which features the cable pattern, as the cables are centered on the design and you won’t be able to work them easily if they are spread across two dpns. Updated 12/01/2021 to add two missing abbreviations and correct a minor typo. No changes to detail or instructions.
Wheatsheaf Aran Socks by Loraine Birchall
What is Being Made
The Wheatsheaf Aran Socks are a pair of knitted socks designed by Loraine Birchall and available as a downloadable PDF pattern. This intermediate-level knitting project features decorative wheatsheaf stitch detailing and is constructed using aran weight yarn. The pattern offers multiple sizing options and fit variations, allowing knitters to customize the finished garment to their preferences.
Design and Fit Options
The pattern provides three distinct fit variations to suit different preferences and needle gauges:
- Slim Fit: Knitted entirely using 4mm (US6) needles throughout for a slimmer, more fitted sock
- Regular Fit: Uses 4mm (US6) needles for the cuff and 4.5mm (US7) needles for the remainder of the sock, providing a balanced fit
- Slouchy/Relaxed Fit: Constructed with larger needles for a more relaxed, comfortable silhouette
The pattern also includes a folded cuff version option, which uses 4.5mm needles for the cuff and 5mm needles for the rest of the sock in the large size, or 4mm needles for the cuff and 5mm needles for the remainder in the small size.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level project employs fundamental sock knitting techniques. The construction method involves working from the cuff down to the toe, a classic approach in sock knitting. The pattern demonstrates gauge adjustment through needle sizing, allowing knitters to achieve different fits and finishes by changing needle diameter while maintaining the same stitch pattern. The folded cuff option introduces an additional construction technique, creating a professional finished edge.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
Wheatsheaf Stitch is the primary decorative element featured throughout these socks. This traditional stitch pattern creates a distinctive visual texture that adds visual interest while remaining suitable for intermediate knitters. The wheatsheaf motif provides both aesthetic appeal and structural integrity to the finished garment.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Wheatsheaf Aran Socks are designed to work with aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn category that creates durable, warm socks with good stitch definition.
Yarn Options:
- Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride Worsted (standard version)
- Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride Worsted or Aran weight yarn (folded cuff version)
- Stylecraft Life Heritage Aran
Yardage Requirements:
- Standard Sock Version: 200–220 yards
- Folded Cuff Sock Version: 200–250 yards
Needles Required:
- 4mm (US6) needles
- 4.5mm (US7) needles
- 5mm needles (for folded cuff and slouchy fit variations)
The pattern accommodates both metric and US needle sizing conventions, making it accessible to knitters using either measurement system. The availability of multiple needle size options allows knitters to achieve their preferred fit and fabric characteristics.
Pattern Information
This pattern was created by independent designer Loraine Birchall and released in October 2015 as Pattern Version 1.0. The downloadable PDF format provides convenient access to detailed instructions and imagery for knitters working on this intermediate-level sock project.
