Product Description
(Patron en FR inclus)
What’s this: This is the Wavelength Cowl. It was originally designed for the May 2019 Knitcrate Partner crate featuring Malabrigo.
Why should I make this: This stitch pattern is one of my very favorites. It’s not the 1st time (or the last time) I use it. It really makes the yarn pop, and benefits from natural fibers and their ability to block beautifully. The resulting cowl is a masterpiece you can show off all year long.
When will this get the most use: Whenever you need an all-day hug!
Who is it for: Just about anyone!
Where do I start: This pattern is rated Intermediate - you’ll need to know or be eager to learn the basic crochet stitches, colour changing & post stitches. You will need 100g of worsted weight yarn in each of 2 colours (used here, Malabrigo Dos Tierras) and a 5 mm hook. Other notions: 7 1’’ buttons, a yarn needle, and some stitch markers.

Project Overview
The Wavelength Cowl is an intermediate-level crochet design that creates a sophisticated, textured cowl neck accessory. This downloadable crochet pattern produces a finished piece measuring 29 inches in length and 14.5 inches in height, making it an ideal garment for layering and everyday wear. The design incorporates a striking colorwork element using two complementary yarn colors that work together to create visual depth and interest.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a cowl—a close-fitting neck accessory that drapes elegantly around the shoulders. The Wavelength Cowl is constructed as a rectangular piece that wraps around the neck, featuring button closures for adjustable fit and styling versatility. The finished cowl measures 29 inches long and 14.5 inches tall, providing substantial coverage and warmth.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Wavelength Cowl employs several intermediate crochet techniques to achieve its distinctive appearance:
- Post Stitches: The pattern utilizes both front post double crochet (fpdc) and back post double crochet (bpdc) stitches, which create textured, dimensional fabric by working around the post of stitches from previous rows rather than into the top loops. These techniques are essential for building the wave-like texture that gives this cowl its name.
- Double Crochet (dc): Standard double crochet stitches form the foundation of the pattern and provide structure and drape.
- Linked Double Crochet (ldc): This variation adds another layer of textural interest to the design.
- Chain Stitches (ch): Chains create the foundation and spacing elements throughout the pattern.
- Colorwork Integration: The pattern incorporates two distinct yarn colors (A and B) that are worked throughout to create visual contrast and pattern definition.
Pattern Structure
The Wavelength Cowl is worked in rows from a chain foundation. The stitch guide indicates the pattern begins with a chain-65 foundation, establishing the width of the cowl. The pattern is organized into repeating sections that build horizontally across the piece, with the design containing approximately 6 horizontal repeats of the core pattern unit. Rows are worked back and forth, with the pattern distinguishing between wrong-side (WS) and right-side (RS) rows to ensure proper stitch placement and texture development.
Materials and Specifications
The pattern calls for Malabrigo Dos Tierras yarn, a premium blend combining 50% Merino Wool and 50% Baby Alpaca. This fiber composition provides warmth, breathability, and a luxurious feel against the skin. The yarn weight is DK (double knit), a medium-weight category ideal for creating fabric with good drape and structure. One skein each of two colors is required: 133 Reflecting Pool (A) and 009 Polar Morn (B), with each skein containing 100 grams and 210 yards (193 meters) of yarn.
A 5 mm crochet hook is used to work with the DK-weight yarn, providing the appropriate fabric density and drape. Additional notions include 7 buttons measuring 1 inch (2.5 cm) each for the closure mechanism, a yarn needle for weaving in ends and potentially securing buttons, and stitch markers to track pattern repeats and maintain consistency throughout construction.
Gauge and Sizing
Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions. The pattern specifies that 3 pattern repeats and 10 rows should measure 4 inches (10 centimeters) when blocked. Crocheters are instructed to work a gauge swatch in pattern until measurements can be taken, then adjust hook size if necessary to match the specified gauge. This ensures that the finished cowl will be the intended 29 inches long and 14.5 inches tall.
Skill Level
Classified as an intermediate project, the Wavelength Cowl requires familiarity with fundamental crochet techniques and the ability to work post stitches accurately. Crafters should be comfortable reading pattern abbreviations, maintaining consistent tension, and managing multiple yarn colors. The colorwork element and post stitch techniques elevate this beyond beginner level, making it suitable for crocheters with some experience.
