The spring and summer months are almost upon us here in the great white north and I couldn’t be more excited! While I love winter, I love changing seasons because it means changing wardrobes. I’m beyond ready to break out my shorts, sleeveless crochet tops and strappy sandals and this year I’ve added the Wandering Free Summer Top to my wardrobe. This crochet summer top will make the perfect addition to your spring & summer wardrobe. It’s got an amazing drape and is very lightweight… perfect for our hot summer days!
I chose Woolike by Loops & Threads and it is the perfect yarn for this summer crochet top. Woolike is a machine washable and dryable yarn that is 85% acrylic and 15% nylon.

The Wandering Free Summer Top is a women's crochet garment designed for warm-weather wear. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating a fitted summer top available in eight sizes ranging from extra-small through 4XL, making it accessible for a wide range of body types. The design is worked from the bottom up, with shoulders seamed together upon completion, creating a structured yet comfortable silhouette ideal for layering or wearing alone during warmer months.
This project is executed entirely in crochet, a fiber craft that uses a single hook to create interlocking loops of yarn. The Wandering Free Summer Top employs several foundational and intermediate crochet techniques to achieve its finished structure and drape.
The pattern utilizes bottom-up construction, a common method in garment design where the crafter begins at the hem and works upward toward the neckline and shoulders. This approach allows for easier fitting adjustments and provides natural shaping opportunities as the piece develops. After the main body is complete, seaming joins the shoulder sections together, creating clean, finished edges and a professional appearance.
The pattern incorporates specialized techniques including chainless single crochet (abbreviated as csc), an advanced finishing method that creates a polished edge without the traditional chain foundation. Additionally, the design features alternate double crochet (Alt-dc) stitching, which adds textural variation and visual interest to the fabric. Double crochet decreases (dc2tog) are employed for shaping and tapering the garment to fit the body properly.
The Wandering Free Summer Top incorporates the following crochet stitches:
The Wandering Free Summer Top is crafted using Super Fine weight yarn (also labeled as weight 1), a lightweight yarn category ideal for creating breathable, draping summer garments. The sample featured in the pattern was created using Loops & Threads Woolike in Teal, a yarn blend composed of 85% acrylic and 15% nylon, offering durability and easy care. Each skein contains 678 yards (620 meters) and weighs 3.5 ounces (100 grams).
The pattern calls for a size G/6/4.00mm crochet hook, a medium-sized hook appropriate for working with Super Fine weight yarn at the specified gauge. Additional tools required include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming sections, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points, and scissors for cutting yarn.
The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 10 rows measuring 4 inches by 2.5 inches respectively, measured over the stitch pattern used in the main body. Achieving proper gauge is essential for ensuring the finished garment fits correctly across the eight available sizes. The pattern provides a swatch reference on page 2 to assist crafters in matching their tension to the designer's specifications.
