Waihi Socks by Sarah Ronchetti
What is Being Made
The Waihi Socks are a feminine sock design created by independent designer Sarah Ronchetti. This downloadable knitting pattern produces socks that showcase a sophisticated combination of lace and cable stitch work. The design features a mirrored lace pattern on the back of the leg, creating a balanced and visually interesting finished garment suitable for advanced knitters.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs advanced knitting techniques that require intermediate to advanced skill levels. The primary construction method uses the magic loop technique for small diameter knitting, worked on a long circular needle measuring 80cm (30 inches). The pattern is designed to accommodate alternative small-diameter knitting methods, allowing knitters to substitute their preferred technique such as double-pointed needles or other circular needle approaches.
The Waihi Socks incorporate several specialized stitch manipulations including:
- Cable stitches worked through the back loop, creating textured twisted cables
- Lace techniques using yarn overs and decreases to form openwork patterns
- Through-the-back-loop stitching (ktbl) for creating twisted stitch effects throughout the design
- Mirrored pattern work on the sock leg, requiring attention to stitch placement and pattern reversal
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes a carefully selected range of stitches to achieve its lace and cable aesthetic:
- Knit stitches (k) and purl stitches (p) for creating stockinette and reverse stockinette backgrounds
- Knit through back loop (ktbl) for twisted stitch definition
- Yarn overs (yo) to create lace openings
- Decreases including slip-slip-knit (ssk) and knit two together (k2tog) for shaping and lace formation
- Cable stitches including C2Btbl (cable 2 stitches back through the back loop) and C2Ftbl (cable 2 stitches front through the back loop) for dimensional texture
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Waihi Socks pattern is designed to work with 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights, making it suitable for a range of sock yarn options. The pattern requires a long circular needle measuring 80cm (30 inches) in an appropriate gauge for the selected yarn weight. The use of these lighter yarn weights combined with advanced stitch work creates a delicate, refined finished sock with excellent drape and definition of the cable and lace patterns.
Pattern Complexity and Skill Level
This is an advanced difficulty pattern best suited for experienced knitters who are comfortable with cable work, lace knitting, and small-diameter circular knitting techniques. The combination of mirrored lace patterns, cables worked through the back loop, and the requirement to manage stitch placement across multiple pattern repeats demands strong foundational knitting skills and the ability to read and interpret stitch charts and written instructions simultaneously.
