Product Description
The Vurr sock pattern features subtle mosaic colourwork which works up quickly and is easily memorable. I called the pattern Vurr because it knits up fast and the motif reminds me of a spinning top which is “vurr” in my native Estonian. Mosaic knitting is one of the easiest colourwork techniques. The mosaic pattern knits up using just one of the yarns at a time. The remaining yarn is left hanging at the beginning of the round. Knitting involves slipping the stitches in a round that should be the "other" colour.
Socks are worked from toe up with an option of short row heels or Peasant heels. Size refers to sock foot circumference. Socks can be worked on double pointed needles, two circular needles or on other types of needles convenient for the knitter for knitting small circumferences in the round. The pattern uses metric and imperial systems.

What is Being Made
The Vurr sock pattern creates a pair of socks featuring subtle mosaic colorwork. The design is named after the Estonian word "vurr," inspired by the spinning top appearance of the mosaic motif and the quick knitting pace of the project. These are toe-up socks with customizable heel options, available in multiple sizes based on sock foot circumference.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs mosaic knitting, one of the most accessible colorwork techniques for knitters. Mosaic knitting simplifies the colorwork process by working with only one yarn color per round or row, while the alternate yarn is left hanging at the beginning of the round. The technique involves slipping stitches in rounds where the alternate color would appear, creating the visual pattern without the complexity of traditional two-color knitting.
The pattern offers flexibility in how the mosaic design is executed. The sample demonstrates alternating colors on each round—one round in one color followed by one round in the alternate color. However, the chart can also be worked by repeating each row twice, working two consecutive rounds in one color before switching to two rounds in the alternate color.
Socks are constructed using the toe-up method, allowing knitters to customize the fit and length. The pattern provides options for heel construction, including short row heels and Peasant heels, giving knitters choice in their preferred heel technique.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitches (primary stitch for sock fabric)
- Slipped stitches (essential for creating the mosaic colorwork pattern)
Materials
The Vurr socks are designed for 4-ply yarn weight, a medium-weight yarn that works well for standard sock construction. The pattern is compatible with multiple needle styles, including double pointed needles, two circular needles, or other preferred sock knitting needle types, allowing knitters to choose their preferred method for working in the round.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore colorwork techniques. While mosaic knitting is described as one of the easiest colorwork methods, the combination of toe-up construction and heel options requires intermediate-level experience.
Pattern Format
The Vurr sock pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, making it accessible for immediate use after purchase.
