Product Description
A friend of mine wanted me to make here a messy bun. I was SO in love with Cable/Braid stitches at the time, so I designed a new pattern for her. Her name is Cindy, so I decided to name the pattern after her.
Like I said earlier I was in LOVE with Cable/Braid stitches at the time, so I decided to design a matching Cowl and Fingerless Gloves to with the Hat.
The sizes range from 0-6 months to an Adult Large. The pattern calls for worsted weight/aran size yarn.
I hope you LOVE the Cable/Braid stitches as much as I do!
Twisted Messy Bun Set Crochet Pattern by Jo's Crafty Hook
Project Overview
The Twisted Messy Bun Set is a versatile crochet collection designed by Jo's Crafty Hook that includes multiple coordinating accessories: cowls, gloves, hats, and mittens. This intermediate-level pattern set allows crafters to create a complete coordinated wardrobe of textured pieces using consistent stitch techniques and yarn specifications.
What Is Being Made
- Cowls for neck warmth and layering
- Gloves for hand coverage
- Hats featuring the signature twisted texture
- Mittens for cold-weather protection
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern emphasizes post-stitch techniques that create dimensional, twisted textures characteristic of the set's design. The primary construction method relies on Front Post stitches, which are worked around the post of stitches in previous rows rather than into the top loops. This technique creates raised, three-dimensional fabric with excellent drape and visual interest.
The pattern incorporates Foundation stitches for creating stable, professional-looking cast-on edges without requiring a separate foundation chain. This approach provides better structure for fitted pieces like gloves and mittens.
Decreasing techniques are integrated throughout for shaping, including Single Crochet 2 Together for gradual tapering and combined Front Post Double Crochet and Double Crochet decreases for maintaining textural consistency while reducing stitch counts.
Stitches Used
- Chain (CH): Foundation stitch for starting rows; Ch 1 does not count as a stitch, while Ch 3 counts as a Double Crochet
- Slip Stitch (SS): Used for joining rounds and finishing edges
- Single Crochet (SC): Basic stitch for dense, structured sections
- Double Crochet (DC): Standard stitch for height and drape
- Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC): Primary texture-building stitch worked around the front post of previous row stitches; gauge is 15 FPDC = 4 inches
- Front Post Triple Crochet (FPTRC): Extended post stitch for additional height and dramatic texture
- Foundation Double Crochet (FDC): Alternative cast-on method for professional edges
- Single Crochet 2 Together (SC2TOG): Decrease stitch for shaping
- FPDC & DC Decrease: Combined decrease maintaining the twisted post-stitch aesthetic
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Twisted Messy Bun Set is designed to work with Worsted Weight yarn (#4 weight classification), with total yardage requirements of 2.5 to 3.5 ounces per project. Worsted weight yarn provides excellent stitch definition for post stitches, allowing the twisted texture to be clearly visible while maintaining reasonable project completion time.
The pattern accommodates Aran weight yarn as an alternative option, offering crafters flexibility in yarn selection while maintaining the intended fabric characteristics.
Crochet Hooks
- US Hook H/5.0 mm: Primary hook size for most pattern sections
- US Hook G/4.5 mm: Secondary hook size for areas requiring tighter gauge or refined edges
Additional Materials
- Scissors for yarn cutting
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming (if applicable)
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern requires familiarity with fundamental crochet stitches and comfort working with post stitches. Crafters should have experience reading stitch abbreviations and following row-by-row instructions. The pattern provides YouTube video references for Front Post Double Crochet, Front Post Triple Crochet, Foundation Double Crochet, and Single Crochet 2 Together techniques, supporting learners in mastering specialized stitches.
