Product Description
DIY Crochet Espadrilles Soles.
Real shape foot sole
All Sizes from UK women's 1.5 to UK men's 11.5
crochet level - Intermediate
They are made with a basic crochet stitch
Jute twine – 2.5 mm
3.5 mm crochet hook /I recommend working with a metal hook/.
I used 100 g jute yarn. 85 m, 3 ply. Really measured, yarn labels can sometimes fool you
For a pair of soles I used from 100 g (for the smallest size) to 160 g (for the largest size).
You can also use 2 mm jute twine (100 g - 110 m), then you need to change the size schemes. With the size scheme US W- 5.5 you will get size US W-3.5, with the size scheme US W-6.5 - you will get size US W- 4.5, etc.

Twine Jute Espadrilles Soles by MariyaStany
What is Being Made
This crochet pattern creates handmade espadrille soles using jute twine. The design produces a pair of structured soles suitable for converting into finished espadrille slippers or sandals. The pattern includes sizing options ranging from US Women's 3.5 through larger sizes, with instructions for creating both left and right sole pieces.
Craft and Technique Overview
This is an intermediate-level crochet project focused on constructing durable, functional soles from natural jute material. The pattern employs circular and flat crochet construction methods, with specific guidance on row beginnings to prevent shifting during the crocheting process. The designer provides two alternative techniques for starting each row, allowing crafters to choose the method that best suits their working style and helps maintain consistent sole shaping.
Stitches Used
- Single crochet stitch (sc) – the foundation stitch used throughout the sole construction
- Double crochet stitch (dc) – provides structure and texture variation
- Half double crochet stitch (hdc) – creates intermediate height for shaping
- Chain stitch (ch) – establishes the foundation and turning chains
- Slip stitch (sl) – joins rounds and secures stitches
- Increases (inc) – shapes the sole by adding stitches strategically
Materials and Tools
Yarn: Jute twine in 2.5 mm thickness is the primary material, specified as 3-ply construction with a yardage of approximately 85 meters per 100 grams. Yardage requirements vary by size: 100 grams of jute produces the smallest soles (US Women's 3.5), while 160 grams creates the largest sizes. An alternative 2 mm jute twine option is available (100-110 meters per 100 grams), though this substitution requires adjusting the size schemes accordingly—for example, using a US W-5.5 scheme with 2 mm twine will yield a finished US W-3.5 sole.
Tools: A 3.5 mm crochet hook is recommended, with the designer specifically suggesting a metal hook for optimal working with the sturdy jute material.
Yarn Weight Classification
This pattern uses DK (double knit) weight yarn classification, though the jute twine's natural fiber content and construction create a firmer, more structured fabric than typical DK weight yarns, making it ideal for sole applications requiring durability and shape retention.
