Tutti-Frutti Butterfly Knee Socks for Girls
What is Being Made
The Tutti-Frutti Butterfly Knee Socks are a children's knee-high sock design created by designer Keya Kuhn. These socks feature a variegated colorway and are sized for child size 1 ½, with pattern options available in small, medium, and large leg circumferences. The finished socks showcase approximately 350 yards of the total yardage, with flexibility to use the complete 419 yards if the crafter chooses to lengthen the cuff or foot sections.
Knitting Techniques Used
This is an intermediate-level knitting project that employs several fundamental sock-knitting techniques. The pattern uses circular knitting worked in the round to create seamless socks, which is the standard method for sock construction. Crafters have the option to work on either circular needles or double-pointed needles (DPNs), allowing flexibility based on personal preference. The cuff is constructed using ribbed knitting to create stretch and a secure fit around the leg.
Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations
The pattern incorporates essential knitting stitches including:
- K (Knit) – the fundamental knit stitch
- P (Purl) – used in the K1,P1 ribbed cuff
- YO (Yarn Over) – creates decorative eyelet holes, likely contributing to the butterfly design element
- K2tog (Knit Two Together) – a right-leaning decrease stitch
- SKPsso (Slip, Knit, Pass Slipped Stitch Over) – a left-leaning decrease stitch
- SSK (Slip, Slip, Knit) – an alternative left-leaning decrease
- YTF (Yarn to Front) and YTB (Yarn to Back) – yarn positioning techniques
The cuff begins with a K1,P1 ribbed pattern worked for 1 ½ inches, which provides elasticity and a polished finish at the leg opening.
Materials and Gauge
The Tutti-Frutti Butterfly Knee Socks require 419.9 total yards of fingering weight wool distributed across 2 skeins of Regia Design Line 4-ply variegated yarn. The yarn weight is specified as 3-ply and 4-ply options, with the pictured sample using the 4-ply weight at 14 wraps per inch (wpi).
Needles required include US 2 (2.75mm) circular needles with at least a 40-inch cable length, or alternatively US 2 (2.75mm) double-pointed needles for those who prefer DPN construction. The pattern is worked at a gauge of 9 stitches per inch, which is typical for fingering weight sock yarn.
Pattern Cast-On and Construction
The pattern begins with a cast-on of 48 stitches for small, 56 stitches for medium, or 64 stitches for large leg circumference. When using DPNs, stitches are divided evenly across three needles before joining to work in the round. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Keya Kuhn provides a complete blueprint for creating charming, colorful knee socks suitable for children.
