Product Description

This is one of a series of crochet vehicles I made for my children. The back of the trailer is hollow and can be attached so that the door opens at the top or at the bottom depending on if you would like it to be one that carries a small race car (you can fit two of my mini race cars in the truck perfectly) or if you want it to be a truck that takes other cargo. The trailer is attached to the cab of the truck using a button on the back of the cab and a buttonhole on the front of the trailer. Cab: Length 10.5 cm (4.1”), height 10.5 cm (4.1”), width 10 cm (3.9”) Trailer: Length 22 cm (8.7“), height 10.5 cm (4.5“), width 10 cm (3.9“)

While most of my patterns can be made using a different weight yarn and hook. I would not recommend anything lighter weight than DK weight. If you use a heavier weight yarn then you may need to use bigger buttons for closing the back of the truck and for joining the truck and trailer unit together.

Truck and Trailer Crochet Toy Pattern by Jenness Fulton

Project Overview

This downloadable crochet pattern from Nessie's Notions creates an amigurumi-style truck and trailer set designed as toys for children. The designer, Jenness Fulton, created this pattern to complement other toy vehicles in a child's collection. The set features a functional design where the trailer back opens to serve as a ramp for transporting smaller vehicles, or can be positioned upside down to open like a cargo truck door. The button closure at the rear can also function as a tow bar, allowing crafters to attach multiple trailers together for extended play possibilities.

What You'll Create

This pattern produces two interconnected pieces: a truck and a detachable trailer. The truck serves as the primary vehicle, while the trailer features an opening rear section with a button closure. The modular design encourages creative play and allows for customization through multiple trailers or different positioning options.

Crochet Techniques Used

  • Amigurumi construction (three-dimensional stuffed toy creation)
  • Working with multiple yarn strands simultaneously for increased fabric density
  • Seamless joining and assembly of separate components
  • Functional closures using buttons as design elements
  • Shaping and sculpting through strategic increases and decreases

Stitches and Construction Methods

While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern introduction, this intermediate-level project employs standard crochet stitches typical of amigurumi construction. The pattern requires working sections with doubled yarn strands to create sturdier fabric suitable for a toy that will withstand children's play. This technique adds structural integrity to the vehicle components.

Materials Required

  • Crochet Hook: 3.5 mm (E size)
  • Yarn Weight: DK (Double Knit) weight yarn
  • Yarn Colors: Main color (2 skeins recommended), grey, white, and black for details
  • Suggested Yarn Brand: 4 Seasons
  • Additional Notions: Yarn needle for weaving in ends and assembly, button for trailer closure

Yarn Quantity Notes

The pattern recommends having two skeins of your chosen main color, regardless of individual skein weight. This dual-skein recommendation accommodates sections of the pattern where two strands are worked together simultaneously, increasing yarn consumption while creating a more durable toy suitable for active play.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle multi-component projects and techniques like working with doubled yarn. The modular construction and functional elements add complexity beyond beginner amigurumi projects.

Design Features

The truck and trailer set showcases thoughtful toy design with interactive elements. The opening trailer rear and reversible door configuration provide multiple play scenarios. The button-as-tow-bar feature demonstrates how functional closures can serve dual purposes, encouraging crafters to think creatively about toy construction and inspiring expansion of the vehicle collection through additional trailers.
