Product Description
This hat was inspired by the yarn from Two Sister’s Yarn Co. It is the perfect neutral with subtle speckles, then I found the perfect pom pom to top it off. A simple textured pattern made the combo shine.
I love a folded brim to keep your ears extra warm, also if you are knitting for a gift and don’t quite know how long to make your hat, they can just fold over more or less of the brim (the hat will always cover their ears).
Uses sigled strand DK weight yarn or a fingering held together with lace weight yarn (equals same gauge).
Toasted Mallow Hat by Shannon Larson
What is Being Made
The Toasted Mallow Hat is a beginner-friendly knitted hat designed by Shannon Larson of Justlivin Designs. This project creates a warm, textured hat featuring a distinctive folded brim that provides extra ear coverage. The design is versatile and available in multiple sizes, making it suitable for both adult and child recipients. The folded brim design offers practical flexibility—the wearer can adjust how much of the brim folds over based on personal preference and fit, making it an excellent choice for gift-giving when exact head measurements are uncertain.
Techniques Used
The Toasted Mallow Hat employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level crafters. The construction involves working in the round using circular needles, a core technique for hat construction that creates seamless, tubular fabric. The pattern incorporates a folded brim construction method, which adds both functionality and visual interest to the finished piece. The hat features a simple textured pattern that combines with the yarn's natural characteristics to create visual depth without requiring complex stitch work.
Stitches Used
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, the design utilizes a simple textured pattern that is accessible to beginners. The pattern works across cast-on stitch counts of 96, 108, or 120 stitches depending on the desired size, indicating the use of basic knit and purl combinations to create the textured effect. The straightforward stitch pattern allows new knitters to develop fundamental skills while producing a visually interesting finished hat.
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The Toasted Mallow Hat requires approximately 100 to 150 grams of yarn depending on the size and yarn weight selected. Knitters can choose either one 100g skein of DK weight yarn or combine one 100g skein of fingering weight yarn with one 50g skein of lace weight yarn held together. The sample projects showcase different yarn options: Sample 1 uses Two Sisters Yarn Co Magic City DK in 'Toasted Marshmallow' for an adult small size, while Sample 2 combines Brooklyn Tweed Peerie in 'Arabesque' with The Alpaca Yarn Co. Halo Pattern Watercolors in 'Nebula' for a child size.
Needles: The pattern requires US #4/3.5mm 16-inch circular needles for the main pattern sections and US #5/3.75mm 16-inch circular needles for the brim, or one size less than the gauge needle for the pattern work. Additionally, US #5/3.75mm double-pointed needles (dpns) are needed, likely for the crown decreases as the hat tapers toward completion. The use of both circular needles and dpns reflects standard hat construction methodology for seamless, in-the-round knitting.
Sizing and Gauge
The pattern is designed in multiple sizes, with cast-on options of 96, 108, or 120 stitches to accommodate different head sizes. The documented samples include both adult small and child sizing, demonstrating the pattern's adaptability across age groups. Achieving proper gauge with the specified needle sizes is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions.
