Product Description
As I was growing up, my mother was always smothering her chilly feet in thick, comfy socks and toasting her toes near the wood stove or over the old, metal registers. Reminiscent of her favorite comfy socks, I designed this pair of top-down socks as a birthday present to keep her toes nice and warm through our nippy Ohio Spring.
This sock is worked top-down with a heel flap, ribbing that fades out over the instep, and a Kitchener stitch graft to close the toe.
Sizes: S, M, L, and XL.
**For Best Fit: Choose the size with finished measurements that are about 10% smaller than your actual foot measurements. Foot length can be easily altered by adding or removing rows in the last section before the toe decreases.
Size Shown: XL, model’s foot has a 9.5 in / 24 cm circumference and 10.5 in / 26.7 cm length.
Toast Your Toes Knitted Socks by Barb @ Woollyside
Project Overview
Toast Your Toes is a pair of top-down knitted socks designed by Barb @ Woollyside as a cozy, warm accessory inspired by the comfort of classic homemade socks. These intermediate-level socks are crafted to keep feet warm through cool seasons and are customizable in length to fit various foot sizes.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a complete pair of knitted socks worked from the cuff down to the toe. The design features a traditional construction method that allows for easy customization of foot length. Available in multiple sizes, these socks are intended as a practical and comfortable footwear project suitable for gift-giving or personal wear.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Top-down construction, beginning at the cuff and working toward the toe
- Circular knitting using double-pointed needles (dpn) for seamless, tubular fabric
- Gauge-based sizing to ensure proper fit with finished measurements approximately 10% smaller than actual foot measurements
- Customizable foot length through row additions or removals in the leg section before toe decreases
- Toe decreases to shape and close the sock end
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
While specific stitch patterns are not detailed in the provided content, the pattern employs standard sock knitting stitches worked in the round using the gauge of 9 stitches and 12 rows per 1 inch (2.5 cm). The construction relies on fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
Yarn: Gerschubie Fiber Arts Solfegè Sock in fingering weight (4-ply), consisting of 75% superwash merino wool and 25% nylon. One skein provides 440 yards per 100 grams and is worked in the colorway Holly and Ash.
Needles: Two sets of U.S. size 1 (2.25 mm) double-pointed needles and U.S. size 2 (2.75 mm) double-pointed needles, each set containing 5 needles for circular knitting.
Additional Notions: A tapestry needle is required for finishing.
Finished Measurements and Sizing
The pattern includes multiple sizes. The small size features a finished foot width of 3.38 inches (8.6 cm) with a foot circumference of 6.75 inches (17.2 cm). Sizing is designed so finished measurements are approximately 10% smaller than actual foot measurements for optimal fit and comfort.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, Toast Your Toes is suitable for knitters with foundational skills in circular knitting and sock construction. The top-down method and customizable elements make this an accessible yet rewarding project for developing crafters.
