Product Description
Soap Sacks are a great way to use up your cotton stash and give back to the community. I was excited to get involved but struggled to find knitting patterns, so I wanted to provide an option for other knitters out there.
I love how a simple yarn over can turn a garter stitch swatch into a thick woven texture that is perfect for a soap sack. This is excellent for beginners or TV knitting. If you can knit a stitch you can make this!
Most patterns are written as 6” across and 8” tall, but since this is a horizontal pattern, I flipped it. So you will cast on enough stitches for 8” across (to fold in half) and knit 6” from the cast on.
The crochet hook can be used for the bind-off to provide a little more elasticity but is primarily used for a chain loop. If you prefer an i-cord or another knitting technique the hook isn’t necessary.
Tiny Bamboo Soap Sack by NichKnit Designs
Project Overview
The Tiny Bamboo Soap Sack is a beginner-friendly knitted accessory designed to hold a bar of soap. This small, practical project measures 4 inches by 6 inches when finished and is created using basic knitting techniques combined with simple crochet finishing. The sack features an open, lacy construction that allows water to drain while keeping soap contained, making it ideal for bath or shower use.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a small rectangular soap holder pouch. The finished sack is approximately 4 inches wide by 6 inches tall and includes a crocheted chain loop for hanging. The open-weave construction of the knitted fabric allows for proper drainage and ventilation, making it functional for holding a standard bar of soap in the bath or shower.
Techniques Used
The Tiny Bamboo Soap Sack employs fundamental knitting and crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The main fabric is created using a repeating two-row pattern that incorporates yarn overs to create the lacy, open texture. After the knitted piece is completed, a crochet hook is used to create a hanging loop and attach it to the finished knit fabric. The project concludes with basic seaming to close the sides and bottom of the sack.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (K): The foundational stitch used throughout the main fabric
- Yarn over (YO): Creates decorative and functional holes in the fabric
- Yarn over wrap (YOW): A variation that combines a yarn over with knit stitches and a pass-over technique to create texture and openness in the fabric
- Single crochet (SC): Used to attach the crocheted chain loop to the knitted piece
- Chain stitch: Creates the 18-chain hanging loop
- Cast on (CO) and Bind off (BO): Standard edge techniques for beginning and ending the knitted fabric
Materials
The Tiny Bamboo Soap Sack requires minimal materials, making it an economical project. The yarn is 100% cotton worsted weight, totaling approximately 65 yards (1.1 ounces). Cotton is an ideal fiber choice for a soap sack due to its absorbency and durability when exposed to moisture. Knitting needles required are US 7 (4.5 mm), and a Size G or 7 crochet hook is needed for the finishing loop. Additional notions include a darning needle for seaming. The pattern recommends a gauge of 18 stitches per 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch to achieve the correct finished dimensions.
Pattern Construction
The pattern begins with casting on 42 stitches. The main fabric is created by repeating a two-row sequence: Row 1 (wrong side) consists of knit 1, then a repeat of the yarn over wrap technique to the last stitch, finishing with knit 1. Row 2 (right side) is worked entirely in knit stitch. This two-row repeat continues until the fabric measures 6 inches from the cast-on edge, ending with Row 1. The piece is then bound off. A 30-inch yarn tail is cut for seaming purposes. Using a crochet hook, an 18-chain loop is created and attached to the knitted piece using single crochet. The flat knitted rectangle is folded in half and seamed along the side and bottom edges to form the finished pouch.
