Product Description

These wonderfully warm mittens originated in Newfoundland and are made with tufts of roving knitted into the fabric while knitting. The roving will matt lightly over time and create a cozy warm inner cocoon. I like to call them Uggs for my hands.

The adult pattern comes in two sizes, small and medium but is easily customized by adding or subtracting 4 stitches and adjusting the length accordingly.

These could also be suited for an advanced beginner as long as they know how to knit in the round, either on double point needles or using the magic loop method.

Aran weight yarn knitting to a gauge of 4-4.5 stitches per inch is recommended.

They make wonderful gifts as well.

Happy knitting and let me know how you like them!!

What is Being Made

These are adult-sized thrummed mittens designed for warmth and texture. Thrummed mittens are a traditional knitting technique where roving or fleece fibers are incorporated directly into the fabric during knitting, creating an exceptionally insulated and cozy interior. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for both adult small and medium sizes, with the option to adjust sizing by adding or subtracting stitches as needed.

Knitting Techniques Used

The pattern employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques that create both structure and visual interest:

  • Thrumming: The defining technique of this project, where roving or fleece is worked into the knitted fabric to add insulation and texture. The pattern includes a dedicated section on page 3 explaining thrum preparation and placement methodology.
  • Circular knitting: The mittens are worked in the round using double point needles, which creates seamless construction and allows for continuous circular shaping.
  • Ribbing and stockinette stitch: The cuff begins with a purl round followed by knit rounds to establish the basic fabric structure.
  • Increases and decreases: The pattern incorporates M1 (make one) increases and K2TOG (knit two together) decreases to shape the mitten.
  • Optional color work: Crafters may choose to cast on and purl the first round in a contrasting color before switching to the main color for added visual detail.

Stitches Used

This intermediate pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches executed with precision:

  • Knit stitch (K): The primary stitch forming the main fabric of the mittens.
  • Purl stitch (P): Used for the initial cuff round and optional contrasting color cast-on row.
  • K2TOG (knit two together): A right-leaning decrease used for shaping.
  • M1 (make one): An increase worked by picking up the strand of yarn between two stitches from front to back and knitting into the back loop, creating a new stitch without visible holes.
  • TBL (through back loop): Stitches worked through the back loop to create twisted effects or modified stitch definitions.

Materials and Gauge

The mittens are constructed using heavy worsted or light bulky weight yarn, requiring approximately 130 to 150 yards total. To create the thrummed interior, roving or fleece measuring approximately 2 ounces is needed. Crafters will require size #8 or #9 double point needles, along with a stitch holder and stitch marker for construction and shaping.

The recommended gauge is 3.5 to 4 stitches per inch, which should be checked before beginning to ensure proper mitten fit. The pattern begins with a cast-on of 32 stitches for adult small or 36 stitches for adult medium, divided evenly across four double point needles for seamless circular knitting.

Pattern Details and Sizing

The cuff construction begins with a purl round followed by 6 rounds of knitting for the small size or 8 rounds for the medium size. The pattern notes that the cuff fit around the wrist can be adjusted by knitting additional rounds if a snugger fit is desired. Beyond the two provided sizes, crafters can customize the mitten dimensions by adding or subtracting 4 stitches from the cast-on number, allowing flexibility for different hand sizes and preferences.
